Biography[]

Appearance[]

Like her father, Diane had pale white skin and maroon eyes. While not disguised, she wore a very intricate dark purple-black frilly one piece dress, with matching arm covers, glovets and a black hair-piece that ran across the right side of her head, giving her a mysterious, alluring look. Her hair was a pale shade of blonde, which she kept tied up at the back in a ponytail while allowing it to grow out small bangs on both sides of her head by saying a spreading spell and shaking the ground with her in the mix.

Personality[]

Diane exhibited a devious, murderous streak much like her father. Her most frightening ability was perhaps her silver tongue, as she was capable to worm her way into people and bend them to her will in very short spans of time, such as when she was able to mastermind a murder in South America simply by charming and then manipulate a local young man into murdering an archaeologist, while passing herself off as a local by the name of Mariana Etista and despite knowing the guy only for a short while, or when she succeeding into seducing and manipulate Barbarossa Sassina, the seasoned and brutal right-hand man of a mafia family, into not only killing his associates but also his own boss, once again managing to do so quite rapidly, before betraying him without a second thought.

Additionally, she could be highly independent and was capable of murder solo. She also presented a somewhat morbid playfulness, going so far as to re-create one of her father's murders through arranging caricature crime scenes around a new victims of her own.

On the surface, however, Diane presented herself as amicable - at least, when around Lucy Baker. She had a calm demeanour that belied her quest for vengeance, seeking to end Alfendi Layton's life whatever the cost in retribution for her father's killing. She was later proven to be conclusively mistaken in her assumption of Alfendi's guilt, though by then she was already deceased.

Diane possessed remarkable voice mimicry skills, being easily able to alter her voice to various tones, which greatly aided her in her schemes, such as when she tried to assume the identity of a demon, or when she copied the voice of Alfendi to lure Lucy into a trap.

Layton Brothers: Mystery Room[]

Diane was the daughter of Keelan Makepeace, the man responsible for most of the ruthless Jigsaw Puzzle Killings; just as bloodthirsty as her father, she even was present at one of said killings, where the two, nonchalantly, took a photo as a memento. She once witnessed her inebriated father claim that he could get away with his killings because he had connections inside Scotland Yard. At some unknown point, Keelan suffered a betrayal of some kind by the head of the Agonni family, Severino Agonni, earning the latter the emnity of Keelan's daughter.

Diane never knew for certain who his 'friends in the force' could be. However, after Keelan was killed at Forbodium Castle, she became convinced that Inspector Alfendi Layton, the prime suspect in the death, was his ally, and that he had betrayed her father by killing him.

Main article: Mariana Etista

Three and a half years later, following a period of movements unknown, she disguised herself as Mariana Etista, a young South American woman fluent at English, and took up a position at a hotel run by Micah Sasucasa. She quickly became the bride in an arranged marriage with Chico Careta, an influenceable and naive young man, who soon became the local guide of an archaeology group led by Archie O'Logie. When the team dug up a stone idol, she convinced Careta to steal the idol by killing O'Logie, by pretending to be a demon trapped inside the idol; although deep down, Careta had realized who the "demon" truly was, he refused to see the truth, and went along with her request. She participated in the plan by bringing up the glasses for O'Logie and Doug Scowers to drink Careta's liquor with at the storage hut. After Careta did as he was told, he gave to his bride-to-be the stone idol.

Half a year later, when the investigation of the walking corpse case was being re-opened by the Mystery Room, she convinced Careta to visit the UK, knowing that Careta would be found as the killer. While Careta was being investigated, she fled the village along with the stone idol, leaving no traces of herself behind, and returning to London unseen.

Later, Diane started to date Barbarossa Sassina, the right-hand man of the feared Agonni family. She was so careful to not being seen, that rumors spread among the Agonni family that Diane was a ghost. Soon after, in an attempt to raise the attention of New Scotland Yard and get revenge on the Agonnis, she orchestrated the Merseyshore Docks murders, recreating the scene to look like carbon copies of the first Jigsaw Puzzle Killings, while also leaving three new pieces belonging to the same mysterious puzzle picture her father was contributing to, once again doing so by manipulating her lover, Barbarossa, into wiping out the entire upper echelon of the family on her behalf. She then literally stabbed Sassina in the back with a poisoned jacknife, while she was distracting him with a long, passionate kiss, meant to also slip in his bloodstream a soporific substance, as well as place a fourth puzzle piece in his coat. While there were some minor setbacks in her scheme, such as Mr. Agonni dying of a broken neck instead of directly burning alive, Barbarossa not only failing to flee in the streets but also breaking the pearl necklace Diane was wearing, making two of the pearl beads bounce inside the room, and thusly inadvertently leaving behind evidence of Diane presence at the scene, Uttar Mistry accidentaly witnessing the stabbing, and finally Barbarossa finding and crumpling the puzzle piece in anger in his fist, she was nevertheless satisfied with the results, and after presumably retriving any other loose pearl bead she could collect, she proceeded with the next phase of her revenge plan.

In a second attempt at raising attention, Diane temporarily went back into her guise as Etista and feigned an attempt to sell the stone idol on the black market, attracting the attention of Hilda Pertinax, an Interpol investigator who had been on the Jigsaw Puzzle Killings investigative team. Knowing that now New Scotland Yard was hot on her heels, Diane lured them to a house in the woods, before barricading herself in the basement, where the agents mysteriously lost her traces. Hilda could have easily figured out the conondrum but, having somewhat become aware of Etista's identity, instead contacted Alfendi, and asked him to investigate the basement while her men kept the perimeter safe. There, Alfendi and Lucy found a series of puzzles left behind, and in solving them, they were eventually able to open the way towards the hidden secret room; none of the traps set were lethal in nature as, for the moment, Diane had no intention to kill the pair. Diane greeted Al and his new partner Lucy Baker, teasing them with her fake identity as Etista before revealing her true name, which made the Potty persona of Alfendi emerge; he correctively guessed that she was also the mastermind behind the slaughter of the Agonni family, which Diane happily replied to having done it as revenge for her father. Potty then guessed that now he was her next target, which again Diane confirmed, but specifying that it she would do so only when she had already set the right location and preparations; while Lucy was skepticat at the idea of Alfendi willing going to his own murder, Diane was sure he would take the bait, if he wanted to truly know what really happened at Forbodium, escaping immediately after in the dark corridors. Alfendi, deeming it too dangerous to follow her directly, stopped Lucy from pursuing, hoping that Hilda's men would intercept her; unfortunately, the hidden room's corridors were connected to an old, hidden subway tunnels adjacent to the mansion, which made Diane able to flee.

As an endgame, Diane sent invitations to Alfendi to come at Forbodium Castle, threatening Al with the prospect of detonating a bomb at "a school, a hospital or Lucy's home" if he failed to show up alone before the others, luring him into a trap. She then sent a similar invitation to Hilda, and she alongside Lucy hasity made way to the castle. There, Diane lured Lucy by faking Alfendi's voice, locking her into a room where she had prepared a recreation of one of her father's murders, "Pig" the millionaire's murder, having previously slain an innocent interpol agent to use his corpse to play the part of Pig, threatening Lucy that she would kill both Alfendi and Hilda if she failed to solve the case, or she would just pump gas into the locked room if she tried instead to escape. To complete the reconstruction, Diane then used her voice mimicking skills to play the part of the suspects in the case, namely, "Cat", the wife of Pig, "Hen" the house-maid, "Donkey" the jeweller, and "Dog" the trader, the latter of which was not only the culprint of the case but also a stand-in for his real counterpart, Diane's father, Keelan.

Meanwhile, Alfendi finally reached Diane, but upon seeing her having Lucy trapped, he was forced to stand down and be captured. Diane then made Layton watch Lucy solve the murder, all in an effort to ostensibly prove that she knew of Alfendi's "corruption"

After solving the case, Lucy learned the true nature of the case that Diane had told her to investigate, as well as Alfendi's involvement with it. Diane even gave her the real files from the case and Lucy discovered that someone had destroyed a vital evidence that could've gotten Keelan arrested earlier. Diane exposed to Lucy her conviction that Alfendi was the one who destroyed the evidence and then purposely killed Keelan, which Lucy did not immediately believe. Diane released Lucy anyway and she left the room but not before advising Lucy to not trust Alfendi Layton.

After that, she blindfolded Layton, and had her final word with the detective, believing it to be her farewell to Alfendi as she prepared to shoot him in the head and then leave the final jigsaw piece next to him, having previously left the second to last one in the pocket of the murdered agent, again to copy the original crime. However, Justin Lawson had managed to evade Diane's attention by using the East Tower rooftop to access the West Tower rooftop through the ivy that runs across the Central Tower. Sneaking in from the top of tower, Justin, both to save Al and permanently shut her mouth, paranoid about what her father could have told her, put a bullet through the right temple of Diane's head, instantly killing her. Lawson would later try to pin the blame on Alfendi just as he had done with her father, by placing the murder weapon in his lap, but this time he was discovered and lawfully arrested for both homicides.

Trivia[]

  • The pronunciation of her name forms the phrase "die and make peace".
  • Despite her diminutive appearance, her age was stated to be 21 in Case 9.
  • Despite being threatened with death by Diane, Lucy maintained that Diane was simply corrupted by her father's killings and death, a sentiment mocked by Alfendi Layton while his "Potty" state fronted.
