Earl Drake Dellendar is a character appearing in the second course of the TV anime Layton Mystery Detective Agency: Kat's Mystery-Solving Files.

The Earl was a millionaire from London more than a century prior present time. During a luxurious party he was hosting, he, for reasons unknown, decided to murder his own wife Milaine by slipping powdered peanut butter in her food, as he knew of her severe peanut allergy.

His plan was quickly discovered by the detective Rufus Aldebaran, who also was attending the party, but Earl Dellendar himself was not arrested for his crime by the arriving police, as Aldebaran, in dire need of funds and financial baking due to his own recent apocalyptic astrological discovery, decided to instead frame the innocent household's chef for the crime in exchange for money, thusly earning the Earl's support and becoming good friends with him.

Some time after, Earl Dellendar requested Aldebaran to solve the mystery of the hidden relics, wanting the ancient treasure's mystery solved, no matter how much it would cost. The reason for his fervent search of the Relics treasure, was because the Earl had fallen victim to an incurable disease, and knowing of the legend according to which the treasure was some kind of time machine, he was hoping it would help him. Aldebaran followed the clues left by the Relics, and indeed found a room with a device that induced cryogenic sleep, and could therefore be considered as a time machine of sort just as the legend had promised.

After acquiring the ancient device, Dellendar decided to use the Relics Room to try to connect himself to a future with further developed medical technology, for there was a chance that there will be a way to treat his disease in the future. So, he put himself and his son Dylan, who was also his doctor, into suspended animation using the Relics Room. There were, however, several problems with the room's use, one of which was that it lacked a timer, and as such, if no one was present to open the coffins of the room when it was time to come out, the people inside couldn't be released. To counter this, the Earl left that duty to the priests of the Cranscoll Cathedral in Southampton, the place where Aldebaran had stored the Relics Room. As compensation, the Earl expanded the building, which was only a church back then, into a majestic cathedral. The Earl also wanted to take Aldebaran with him because of his absolute trust in him, with Alderbaran himself agreeing to the proposal because had his own reasons to reach the future.

While Earl Dellendar had the priests maintain his coffin inside the Relics Room, he did not completely trust them, and as such, as a further precaution, he had them strictly supervised by his own shadowy organization. named "WITCH". The fanatical organization had just two, absolute directives: to eliminate anyone who was seeking to also uncover the mystery of the Relics, and, if the Earl's life was ever put in danger, that they would without mercy annihilate all of the priests of Cranscoll Cathedral as punishment.

For the following century, WITCH was brutally efficient in making sure no one would disturb the Earl's sleep, being more than likely the ones responsible for the suspicious death of Kyle Azan, Katrielle Layton's biological father, who also investigated the Relics.

But despite this precaution put into place, and the heavy price to pay for their failure, nevertheless around hundred years later the priests, and their current chief, accidentally made a critical maintenance mistake with the sleeping chamber, which resulted in the death of the Earl and his son in their sleep. By that time, the occupant of the third sleeping pod, Rufus Aldebaran himself, had already been able to wake up from the Relics Room without anyone's assistance much earlier than the others thanks to having secretly set a special timed device on his person, and had since long before slipped past the priests's watchful eye, WITCH being completely uninterested of his whereabouts or wellbeing; this however, came at an heavy cost as, having not been brought back through the proper means, the chamber had caused an abnormality in Aldebaran's body's cells, which granted him superhuman strenght, but also began to kill him.

Meanwhile, to keep WITCH's eyes off of them, the priests were desperate to hide the accident at all costs, so when not so long thereafter, Professor Hershel Layton and Luke Triton just happened to come by, pursuing the Relics' mystery, they were captured and put to sleep as the Earl an his son's substitutes, to make it look like they were still alive. It was only eleven years later, that Layton and Luke were be freed by Katrielle and the truth came to light.
