- "Luke and Layton meet a mysterious young girl at the dead end on the northern side of the village. She starts to tell them something, but a sinister figure lurking in the shadows scares her off. Afterwards, a puzzled Layton and Luke find a ticket for a Ferris wheel, and head towards it."
The Abandoned Park is the seventh chapter in Professor Layton and the Curious Village.
Plot[]
Layton and Luke speak to Rodney, who works in the town hall. Rodney is confused that the park is somehow closed and urges them to search for the caretaker whose duty it is to unlock the gates daily. Rodney tells them that the caretaker also is responsible for the sewers so he could quite possibly be there, but otherwise he is of no help.
With little other option, the pair venture down into the sewers through a manhole on the road leading to the park. They encounter Pavel, a very lost explorer who has somehow found himself in the sewers. Pavel lets them know that a man in work clothes, presumably the caretaker they’re looking for, has been seen, although he is so directionally-challenged that he’s unable to point them the right way.
Eventually they encounter the caretaker, Sylvain. Upon helping him with a repair job through a puzzle, he happily unlocks the park gates for them, explaining that there was no need to open the park before since none of the villagers were interested in visiting. He expresses his gratitude for their request.
Layton and Luke finally enter the park, only to find it derelict and abandoned, with posters and signs fading away with age and what appears to be a travelling funfair left to rot. On one poster — although the text is no longer legible — is an image of Flora, suggesting that the baron had built the amusement park for the enjoyment of his daughter.
They find the Ferris wheel, but no clues to aid their search for the Golden Apple. Beside a pond, there is a small shack with the door heavily padlocked to prevent entry. Sylvain warns them to stay a safe distance away from anything that looks dangerously old, since the park hasn’t been maintained in so long.
On the ground, they find another journal page, stating the request to build an amusement park for Flora so that she would feel less lonely. It also notes her increasing awareness of the village’s secret.
They return to the Ferris wheel with very little to show for their efforts. As they start towards the village thinking that ticket was meaningless, they’re alerted to a creaking sound behind them. Against all odds, the Ferris wheel comes loose from its frame and begins to roll after them. They sprint away from it as it chases them through the park, narrowly misses them, and crashes through the locked waterside shack, landing in the pond with a splash. Layton manages to duck away with Luke before they can be hit. A figure hidden in the shadows elsewhere tucks a remote control away, upset that the Ferris wheel missed the two.
Layton and Luke approach the remains of the shack, only to discover that it’s actually an entrance to the sewers. They explore the cold and dark underground area beneath the shack, where they unlock a hidden room and discover a key shaped like the tower hidden behind a painting. With the key, they decide to make their way back to the wall that blocks access to the tower, but not before paying the inn another visit.
