Inspector Ercule Hastings is a police inspector appearing in Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy and its anime adaptation. He serves a role similar to Inspector Chelmey and Inspector Clamp Grosky.

Biography[]

Appearance[]

Inspector Hastings is a bulky, middle-aged man with blond hair combed backwards and thick eyebrows. He has small black eyes and a large, bill-like pointy nose. He wears a dark orange overcoat with a very large collar and rolled-up sleeves over a white shirt and a blue necktie. He also wears a belt on his overcoat, light blue pants, and black shoes.

Personality[]

Hastings is way more friendly and cooperative than previous inspectors in the series, as he often accompanies the protagonists to solve mysteries.

Despite his fame on Scotland Yard, and just like Chelmey and Grosky, he is quite incompetent on his job, and the cases he is assigned to always need the help of Katrielle Layton to be solved. He also has the trendency to jump into conclussions early when investigating a crime, similarly to Chelmey.

Hastings is very caring for his wife Felicity, but his job keeps him so busy that they can barely spend any time together.

Millionaires' Conspiracy[]

Inspector Hastings first appears on Case 1: The Hand that Feeds. He asks The Layton Detective Agency to investigate the disappearance of one of the Big Ben's clock hands.

In Case 2: Murder on the Thames, Mayor Pipper Lowonida orders Hastings to investigate an apparent double murder-suicide incident during the Riverside Festival. The Agency gets to Hastings' office at Scotland Yard and he fills them in the details: the victims are called Victoria and Timothy, and it appears to have happened in the same exact way as the legend of the Thames, where a man was thrown into the river while his fiancé was standing from the other side, who jumped as well in horror.

In Case 8: Goddess of the Thames, Hastings boards the Thametanic along with the Agency and Emiliana Perfetti. When the statue of the Goddess of the Thames is stolen, he makes the deduction that navigator Abel Seamon could have done it, as he was the only one who had the chance to communicate with the engineer Declan Swabber to activate the ship's crane and carry the statue. This assumption was not entirely wrong, as the whole crew were accomplices of Captain Midas Pullman, who wanted to sell the statue for huge amounts of money. When the ship gets back on land, a group of policemen under Hastings' orders arrest Pullman and then get the statue out of the water.

In Case 9: The Battle of Hastings, it was Godwin's Day, which also happened to be the birthday of his wife Felicity. Hastings completely forgot about her birthday due to his job keeping him too busy, and all of the shops were closed that day as it is festive. He calls in the Agency and asks them for help because he had to go after a thief who was hiding in a park. The Agency couldn't find any open shop, so they went back with Hastings and then into Guildhall to ask for the mayor's advice. She first scholds Hastings for forgetting his wife's birthday, then he leaves in disappointment. Lowonida suggests Katrielle to give them a spectacular view of London, which gives her an idea. At night, Ercule and Felicity are standing on a hill far from London. Then, they see how the buildings of the city illuminate to form a message that reads "HAPPY BIRTHDAY FELICITY". The two thank Katrielle and send the Agency a lemon cake, Felicity's special recipe.

In Case 10: The Importance of Being Ernest, Inspector Hastings arrests Ernest Greeves upon Dr. Gene Ohm of the Gressenheller University accuses him of stealing his documents. Katrielle then exposed Ohm as the true culprit.
