Layton Mystery Detective Agency: Kat's Mystery-Solving Files is a TV animation of the Professor Layton series, serving as an adaptation of and sequel to Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy. It premiered on April 8, 2018 and consists of 50 episodes.
Premise[]
The official website describes the premise of the anime:
"Professor Layton's daughter, Katrielle Layton, runs the Layton Detective Agency together with the talking dog Sherl and her assistant Ernest, and solves strange cases that happen everyday in London. Originally, she started the job with the purpose of finding her father, Hershel Layton, who had disappeared suddenly, but her incredible ability to solve puzzles made her well-known and she receives numerous requests."
Plot[]
Set slighty before, during and after the events of Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy, the anime follows the adventures of Katrielle Layton, her assistant Ernest Greeves, and Sherl, a talking dog, in a variety of cases.
Most of the episodes are self-contained short stories, these being either brand new tales, or slighty different, reshuffled adaptions of the game Layton's Mystery Journey's own cases; each one of these episodes, share a noticeably similar structure with one another, such as a fourth-wall breaking segment where Ernest asks the audience if they followed along the case, a post-credits trivia section from Katrielle, etc.
However, within the series itself there is a subset of interconnected episodes, known as the "Professor Layton and the Relics Treasure" subseries; these six episodes completely break the mold of the other ones, and not only tell the origins of Katrielle, but also how the young woman's esteemed father, Professor Hershel Layton himself, and his now adult apprentice, Luke Triton, had both mysteriously disappeared from the public eye, as well as Kat and her friends' efforts to find them.

Trivia[]
- It is currently unclear if this animated series should be considered completely canon within the games' own story, in the same vein the "Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva" animated movie is, or if this is not the case at all; the reason for this uncertainty is due to the fact that, unlike with the movie, some of the details, particularly about the adapted cases from "Layton's Mystery Journey", as well as some aspects of the characterization of the characters, slighty clash with what was stated in-game, leaving some room of doubt and debate, about which version of the events should be considered "the complete truth".
- This also especially applies to the "Professor Layton and the Relics Treasure" subseries, as its events have a huge impact and ramifications for the entire series in general, especially for any future storylines.
- At the end of the last episode of the series, Lucy Baker and Alfendi Layton, from the title Layton Brothers: Mystery Room made a surprise last-minute cameo, further cementing the game as a canon part of the overall series.
