Early life[]

Gretchin Doublée was the daughter of wealthy parents and grew up in a mansion in London. As a young woman, she fell in love with a young man named Arnold, who worked as a gardener at the Doublée mansion. Gretchin's father disapproved of the relationship and fired Arnold, forbidding him to speak to Gretchin.

Undeterred, Arnold stood outside of the mansion every day, in rain or sunlight, where Gretchin could see him from a window. Gretchin's father was eventually moved by Arnold's faithfulness. One day, after a hurricane had laid waste to the mansion's gardens, Gretchin's father welcomed Arnold back.

Arnold presented Gretchin with a ring engraved with her initials as well as the date of their marriage, "11 22". After the couple were married, Arnold took over the Doublée family's business and travelled the world managing its affairs. He became so busy that he was only able to spend one day each year at home with his wife in London. Gretchin's ring became a precious treasure to her, and she always looked forward to her wedding anniversary, when Arnold would come home. She threw dinner parties in the mansion for those occasions.

At some point Gretchin adopted a pet iguana named Rex, which she doted on in Arnold's absence. She used images and figurines of cats, Rex's least favorite animal, to keep Rex from entering certain parts of the mansion.

Gretchin was a member of "Team Adamas", a group of trusted individuals who were tasked by Lord Maximilian Richmond to look for evidence of precious stones on Richmond's property shortly before his death.

Millionaires' Conspiracy[]

In Case 3: The Stolen Kiss, Madame Doublée first appears in the Saveloy Theatre along with the rest of the Seven Dragons to attend to the premiere of Maverick D. Rector's romance film "A Naval Advance: No Sub for Love". The final scene with the kiss is cut off. After Katrielle solves the mystery, the reel is fixed using a different scene and the movie becomes an absolute success.

In Case 4: Pet Pandemonium, she requests the Layton Detective Agency to find her missing pet, "Rexie-wexie". Upon arriving, she appears disappointed as she expected Professor Hershel Layton to show up instead. Due to a hurry, Doublée had to leave for a meetimg and didn't have time to explain the detectives about her pet. They assumed that Rex was a cat, judging by all of the decorations around her mansion. As it turned out, Rex was actually an iguana and all of the cat decoration was to scare him and keep him inside her mansion so that Gretchen didn't have to put him in a cage. After finding the iguana, Katrielle suggested the madam to replace all of the cat decorations for those of iguanas to help Rex feel like he's welcome at home.

The leader of the seven Dragons, and someone who carries an awful lot of weight. She appears a little formidable at first, but she's actually very kind. She loves her pet 'Rexie-wexie'.

Trivia[]

  • Her name is a pun on "great double chin", referring to her figure.
  • Her marriage marks one of the few in-universe instances where a specific date is mentioned using numbers. "11 22" could mean November 22nd or November XX22, but the actual meaning is unknown.
  • In the game Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy, Madame Doubléè refers to her husband as "my late husband", implying that, unlike the anime, in the game canon Arnold is deceased.
