A Laborious 9 Litres is a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy.

Puzzle

You've received a sudden request for nine litres of fuel - no more, no less. It sounds simple enough, until you realise that all you've got to work with are two drums that are too small and a pump that doesn't stop pouring fuel until the drum is full.

The small drum holds five litres, while the large one holds eight. Although the pump is broken, the machine's other features still seem to be functional. Can you find a way to end up with nine litres of fuel spread across these two drums?

Hints

Click a Tab to reveal the Hint.

To provide nine litres of fuel, you'll need to combine the contents of both drums.

How much fuel might you need in each drum in order to provide a total of nine litres?

Hint 1 advised you to think about how you could combine the contents of the two drums to provide a total of nine litres of fuel.

One such combination would involve having eight litres in one drum, and one litre in the other. Now, think about what you'd need to do to have one litre of fuel in one of the drums.

Start by filling up the large drum, then use its contents to fill up the small drum. This will leave you with three litres of fuel in the large drum.

Empty the small drum, then move the three litres from the large drum into the small drum. After you've done that, fill the large drum again, then use its contents to top up the small drum. Once you've done that, you should have six litres in the large drum.

If you followed the steps listed in Hint 3, the large drum should now have six litres of fuel in it.

Empty the small drum, then fill it again using the fuel in the large drum. The large drum should now have one litre of fuel in it. Empty the small drum, then move this one litre into it. Once you've done that, fill the big drum with eight litres of fuel. That should give you a total of nine litres! Job done!

Solution

Correct

Well, oil be!

Despite working with a broken pump, you can still fulfil the request using the difference in capacity between the two drums.

Even so, it would be a good idea to get that pump fixed soon!
