A Royal Burden is a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy.

Puzzle

"One of the jewels in my royal collection is so colossal and precious, I thought the only place for it would be upon my regal head. Alas, the blasted stone is both so ludicrously large and horrendously heavy that it has now rendered my crown totally unwearable.

I'll gladly give this piece of royal headwear to anyone who can accurately ascertain how many jewels it contains."

Are you able to solve the king's challenge?

Hints

Click a Tab to reveal the Hint.

Count the jewels on the crown one by one, and don't get distracted by the fact that it's spinning.

Start from the top - the single jewel beneath the star is the first one you need to count.

The golden arches that stretch down from the jewel at the top of the crown each contain one green jewel and one purple jewel.

There are four arches in total, so that's eight jewels. Add that one at the top which you've already counted, and you're up to nine.

How many jewels are there on the base of the crown? The fact that it's spinning may make them harder to count, but keep an eye on the star on the top and it will be easier to track its rotation.

There are eight jewels on the base of the crown. Add these to the nine you've already counted, and that makes 17. But what about this "ludicrously large" jewel that made the crown unwearable in the first place?

The king put his prize jewel inside the crown, but it fit so snugly that he couldn't get it out.

You might not be able to see it, but it's another one we need to count.

Solution

Incorrect

Too bad.

Check again to make sure you're counting the jewels correctly.

Correct

A royally good answer!

The crown contains 18 jewels. Very pretty, but useless if the king can't wear it!
