012 - Room Check013 - Bucket Run014 - Cafeteria Conundrum

Bucket Run (Bucket Race in the UK version) is a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Last Specter.

Puzzle

You have two empty buckets and are currently in a park with two fountains.

Starting at the position marked by a star, visit both of the fountains, filling a bucket at each, and return as quickly as possible to the starting point.

Assuming you do not travel along the same path twice, what route should you take? Draw a line along your route.

Hints

Click a Tab to reveal the Hint.

You're looking for the fastest route. It might help to imagine yourself actually carrying the buckets.

Your first instinct might be to run straight to the fountains, but is that really the best approach? Try thinking about it a little more practically.

Taking the shortest route is not the only way to make the trip faster.

Think about other things that could slow you down. Say, carrying something heavy...

US Version

If you fill up the buckets right away, you'll be stuck carrying heavy buckets and trying to rush back to the start. You won't be able to move as quickly as before.

Find a route that allows you to keep the buckets empty for as long as possible.

UK Version

If you fill the buckets up straight away, you'll be stuck carrying heavy buckets while trying to rush back to the start. You won't be able to move as quickly when the buckets are full.

Find a route that allows you to keep the buckets empty for as long as possible.

Solution

Incorrect

Too bad!

US Version

Try to find the route that will take the least amount of time.

UK Version

Try to find the easiest route.

Correct

Correct!

US Version

If you followed the same path traveling in opposite direction, you would have to carry the heavy, water-laden buckets quite a long distance. That would slow you down, so it isn't the fastest way.

UK Version

If you followed the same path, travelling in the opposite direction, you would have to carry heavy, water-laden buckets quite a long distance. That would slow you down, so it isn't the fastest way.
