Cube Hammer (The Mallet's Design in the UK version) is a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Last Specter.

Puzzle

US Version

This wooden hammer is built from seven cubes, each of which is covered in the same pattern of symbols.

One of the cubes needs to be replaced. The arrangement of the symbols on the replacement cube, labeled 2, needs to match all the hammer's other cubes.

Use the stylus to move, rotate, and place the symbols on the replacement cube.

UK Version

The mallet shown below is composed of seven identical cubes built on the same model, with a different sticker on every side. Unfortunately, one of the cubes is cracked and you need to make a new one to replace it.

With picture 1 as a guide, use the stylus to move, rotate and place the stickers on the replacement cube labelled 2.

Hints

Click a Tab to reveal the Hint.

US Version

Study each cube on the hammer carefully, and lay the symbols down one by one, checking each one against the hammer for reference.

Start focusing on the heart and club symbols. If you examine the leftmost cube in the hammer, the proper arrangement of these two symbols should become clear.

UK Version

Study the picture carefully and place the stickers one by one as you confirm their location.

Start with the heart and the club. You should be able to work out the placement of those two stickers just by looking at the leftmost cube.

US Version

After placing the heart and the club in the proper locations, figure out where the star goes.

One of the cubes in the hammer is showing both the heart and the star. Can you find it?

UK Version

After placing the heart and club in their proper locations, try working out where the star goes. One of the cubes in the picture should have both a heart and a star visible. Do you see it?

US Version

Now let's figure out where the diamond goes. Two diamonds are visible on the hammer. one is on a cube that is also showing a spade and the other is on a cube that is also showing a star.

Use both of these cubes as references for figuring out the correct location and orientation of the diamond symbol on the replacement cube.

UK Version

Continuing from Hint 2, let's place the diamond.

Two diamonds are visible in the drawing. One is displayed on a cube where you can also see a spade. The other is on a cube which also has a star visible.

Use both of these cubes to pinpoint the placement and orientation of the diamond sticker.

US Version

The last symbol you need to place is the circle. If you've got all of the other symbols in place, the circle simply goes in the empty space.

However, if you're still a bit unsure about your placement of the other symbols, look for one of the cubes that's showing both a star and a circle for a hint. The circle is to the right of the star, which mean the circle and star must share a border...

UK Version

Continuing from Hint 3, the last sticker to place is the circle.

If you've placed all the other stickers, it should be a simple matter of filling the last open space. If, however, you're still unsure about some of the stickers, look for the cubes displaying both a star and a circle and use the star as a reference point. The circle is next to the star in the picture, so they must share a border.

Solution

Incorrect

US Version

Too bad!

Make sure you pay attention to the orientation of each symbol before placing it on the cube.

UK Version

Too bad.

Pay attention to each sticker's orientation as well as its position on the cube.

Correct

US Version

Bam!

The symbols need to be placed on the replacement cube as shown above to match the rest of the hammer's cubes.

With the replacement cube in place, the hammer is again ready to...hammer!

UK Version

That's right!

The stickers should be placed on the cube as shown above. With all the cubes stuck together again, this mallet is ready for action!
