Dial Trial is a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy. The puzzle must be solved in order to progress the story.


The door of the cargo hold is fitted with a special lock, and Layton and Luke will have to unlock it before they can proceed.

The control device consists of dials that are each separated into four quadrants. These quadrants are marked with the symbols ● and ♦, which have the values "1" and "5" respectively. To open the door, you need to align the dials so that the total value of the symbols in all four quadrants is the same.

Since the total value of the symbols in each of the quadrants needs to be the same, don't you think it would be helpful to work out the total value of all the symbols you're working with?

The total value of every ● and ♦ on the device is 60. Dividing this total by four gives you 15, so you need the dials to be aligned such that every quadrant has a combined value of 15.

Okay, so you know that each quadrant has a total value of 15, but you're having difficulty aligning the dials in such a way as to achieve this?

You might find it helpful to focus on just one quadrant to begin with. For example, look at the quadrant for which the inner dial has a value of four. What do you need to add to this to get a total of 15?

Following on from Hint 3, start by focusing on the larger values, such as 8, 7 and 6: 4 + 8 + ? + ? = 15

4 + 7 + ? + ? = 15

Try out the various combinations, spinning the necessary dials into place and narrowing down the potential solutions. You'll quickly notice that the inner and outer dials are both fixed, which reduces the number of possibilities you'll have to try.



Too bad.

Make sure you haven't made a mistake in your calculations.



Each quadrant should have a total value of 15.
