Even Deal is a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask.


A dealer at the casino places 10 cards on the table in front of you and says,

"The total value of all the numbers I can read from here is 45. The total of the numbers you can read from there is 31. I win!"

Can you rotate as few cards as possible so that you and the dealer both have the same score?

You can start by eliminating any cards with values that don't change when rotated. There are a few of those.

The cards whose values don't change when they're rotated are 1, 2, 5, 8, and 0.

You should be focusing on the remaining cards: 3, 4, 6, 7, and 9.

You only need to rotate one card.

Which could it be?

The dealer's current total score is 45. Yours is 31. The number in the middle of those scores is 38. Is there a card you can rotate to make both of your scores equal 38?

What do you need to add to 31 to get 38?

There's no need for any tricky calculations here.


That's right!

1, 2, 5, 8, and 0 are worth the same either way. Out of the remaining cards, which are 3, 4, 6, 7, and 9, you just need to rotate the 7 to give yourself seven more points and take seven away from the dealer, making it a draw.
