Kitty Solitaire is a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask. The puzzle must be solved in order to progress the story.

Puzzle

Lucky the black cat and her eight white kittens are sitting on a 5 x 5 board. Both Lucky and the kittens can jump over any kitten that is on a horizontally, vertically or diagonally adjacent square. Jumping over a kitten removes that kitten from the grid. Lucky is safe, though, as that little kittens can't jump over her.

Can you jump and bounce the cats around so that only Lucky is left sitting alone in the middle?

Hints

It's important to consider the first move.

You may feel safer leaving Lucky in the middle, but you're going to have to move her to solve this. In fact, the first step is to make her jump four times in a row.

Let's say you chose to move Lucky down on the first move, and down is south.

Keep going and jump Lucky northwest, northeast, then southeast. She should now be sitting in the middle of the rightmost column.

Now try to make one of this kittens jump so that it lands a little closer to Lucky.

Let's pick up from Lucky getting to her last position in Hint 2. The kitten you want to move next is the one that is farthest left. There's only one square it can go to.

After that, another kitten has to move, but there's only one way to avoid getting stuck. After this jump, you should be almost there!

The second kitten that has to move in Hint 3 is the bottom one. Make it jump upward so that you end up with two kittens lined up together at the top.

There's now just one way left for a kitten to jump, so go for it. After that, just jump Lucky into the middle!
