US Version

What was the last digit that the person dialed?

UK Version

A person wants to phone her friend with a piece of good news and hastily punches in the number. After dialling the first digit, she presses eight more buttons, moving her finger down, right, down, left, down, left, up and right.

Which digit did the person dial last?

By the way, the numbers in this area sometimes include symbols like ✻ or # between the digits.

UK Version

If all else fails, the trick is to start at any button and follow the sequence until you find the right one.

US Version

The sequence moves downward, so the first number dialed must be near the top.

That should point you in the right direction.

UK Version

The sequence moves downwards, so the first button pressed can't be near the bottom.

That should point you in the right direction.

The horizontal movements at the start of the sequence are right, then left, then left again.

This means that the first button pressed must be somewhere in the middle column.

US Version

The sequence involves moving down three times without ever moving up. This means that the first button pressed is in the top row.

It should now be clear which button was pressed first.

UK Version
