084 - Neon Orange085 - Slot Sequence 086 - Even Ten

Slot Sequence is a puzzle in the European version of Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask. For the puzzle in the American version of the game, go here.

Puzzle

The numbers on this giant slot machine aren't random. In fact, there's a rule that determines the sequence of numbers that appear every time you activate it. Your task is to work out the rule and predict what four digit number will appear next. Be warned, though - you only have five chances.

Touch the numbers on the Touch Screen to make your prediction. When you're ready, touch the orange button to activate the slot machine.

Hints

Click a Tab to reveal the Hint.

Pay attention to the pair of numbers in the two rightmost slots.

It appears this is a two-digit number that goes up by one time. Well, almost each time.

The two leftmost slots don't change much.

They seem to almost always display either 30 or 31. What could be the significance of that?

The pair of numbers on the left and the pair of numbers on the right go together and form a set.

Furthermore, the two rightmost slots just cycle through the numbers 01 to 12. What could this mean?

It turns out that the numbers in the slot machine are dates. Each time, it shows you the last day of a month and the month itself. That should make it fairly simple to work out the next number.

You don't have to worry about leap years.

Solution

Incorrect

Too bad.

Better luck next time!

Correct

Correct!

Every four-digit number corresponds to a date - specifically, the last day of a month. The next number in the sequence is the last day of the next month. You just have to watch out for February, which only has 28 days.

Good thing it doesn't deal with leap years!
