062 - The Mysterious Note

The Mysterious Note is a puzzle in the American version of Professor Layton and the Curious Village. For the puzzle in the European version of the game, go here.

Puzzle

A detective who was mere days from cracking an international smuggling ring has suddenly gone missing. While inspecting his last-known location, you find a note.

The note appears to be nothing more than a series of numbers, but your gut instinct tells you that this note will reveal the name of the crime kingpin.

Currently there are three suspects in the case: Bill, John, and Todd. Can you break the detective's code and find the criminal's name?

That's right!

If you flip the note upside down, you'll notice that the numbers resemble letters and that those letters form legible sentences. The message recorded there is "Bill is boss. He sells oil."

Trivia

Albeit this puzzle is the same type in both the Japanese and US versions, the Japanese version of this puzzle revolves around helping a detective figure out which of the three suspects (Shigeo, Takeshi, and Masashi) is responsible for the murder of a victim.
