Three Chandeliers (The Same Again in the UK version) is a puzzle in Professor Layton and the Last Specter.

Puzzle

US Version

You love your chandelier SO much that you've decided to order another one just like it. The chandelier catalog has three models that are very similar to yours, but only an exact match will do!

Choose the chandelier, A, B, or C, that is exactly the same as yours on the left.

UK Version

"There's a lovely little chandelier in the dining room, and the master wants me to order another one just like it.

Trouble is, the catalogue has three different models and they all look the same to me! I can't for the life of me work out which one I'm supposed to be getting."

Out of the three chandeliers on the right, A, B and C, can you tell which is the same as the original model?

Hints

Click a Tab to reveal the Hint.

US Version

It's hard to tell the difference between the three chandeliers if you're thinking about their shape as a circle.

Instead, try to imagine cutting each chandelier somewhere and stretching it out so it becomes like a long belt with decorations hanging off of it.

UK Version

The circular shape of the chandeliers may make it difficult to compare them.

Imagine making a cut somewhere along the circumference of each one and unrolling them all so they look like decorated belts.

US Version

On the outer ring of your original chandelier, the circular crystal decorations and the lights are hung in an alternating pattern.

Which chandelier, A, B, or C, shares this arrangement?

UK Version

On the outer ring of the original chandelier, the crystal globe decorations and the lamps are hung alternately.

So, which chandelier in the catalogue shares this arrangement?

US Version

Call the light with the open shade 0. Call the light with the closed shade C. Call the pendant with two globes 2. Call the pendant with three globes 3.

Going clockwise from the closed lamp on the original chandelier, the order of the decorations is:
C, 2, 0, 2, 0, 3.

Try comparing this with the other chandeliers.

UK Version

Call the lamp with the open shade 0. Call the lamp with the close shade C. Call the pendant with two globes 2. Call the pendant with three globes 3.

Going clockwise from the closed lamp on the original chandelier, the order of the decorations is:
C, 2, 0, 2, 0, 3

Try comparing this with the other chandeliers.

The order for the original chandelier is C, 2, 0, 2, 0, 3.
The order for A is C, 2, 2, 0, 0, 3.
The order for C is C, 3, 2, 0, 2, 0.

The chandeliers are circular, so you can rotate them as much as you like. You must know the answer now!

Solution

Incorrect

US Version

Too bad!

The differences between the three chandeliers are quite slight, so you'll need to look very carefully.

UK Version

Too bad.

The differences between the three chandeliers are slight, so you'll need to look carefully.

Correct

Brilliant!

US Version

Chandelier B is exactly the same as yours.

Although if it's so difficult to tell the three models apart, perhaps it wouldn't have mattered which one you ordered...

UK Version

Chandelier B is exactly the same as the original chandelier.

Though if it's that hard to tell them apart, perhaps it wouldn't really have mattered which one Beth had ordered...
