The Azran Civilization

The Azran Civilization (アスラント文明 Asuranto Bunmei) is a lost civilization that existed thousands of years before the events described in the Professor Layton series, yet featured prominently in the prequel trilogy. They first came to be named in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, yet their legacy was felt in both Professor Layton and the Last Specter and Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva.

Several millennia ago, the Azrans existed as an impossibly ancient yet scientifically advanced civilization that created various legacies including the Golden Garden, Ambrosia, and the Nautilus Chamber of Akbadain. They established themselves as a highly knowledgeable civilization, creating various robotic "dolls" named "Azran Dolls". These "dolls", or automatons, were used by the Azran as a labor force, until the dolls, with the capacity to reason like a human being, rebelled, destroying the civilization. Thus, the dolls were sealed away, with Aurora acting as their guardian to prevent their escape.

Chapter 2: The Secret of NorwellEdit

In Hershel Layton's school days, he was taught by Mr. Collins about the Azran civilization. Donald Rutledge, an archeologist, had examined various archeological sites, and had identified the Azrans from this, but apparently not much more information was discovered about the Azrans over the years. Some artifacts were discovered in the city of Pleynoth and were studied to theorize more about the civilization, by the paleontologist Doris Pompitious, who used extensive geological research to theorize that the Azrans were as advanced as current civilization, as well as having a language as advanced as out own. In addition, she proved the Earth one had an entirely different ecosystem, an example of which is the Golden Garden.

Professor Layton and the Azran LegacyEdit

(To be added)

  • The students in Mr. Collins' class were given an essay to write on the Azran civilization, meaning Layton already knows about it before Azran Legacy.
  • Donald Rutledge wrote a book "Ancient Histories" in which he mentioned that the Azran Civilization was scientifically advanced and had their own language. He was very knowledgeable about this topic.
  • The name of the civilization in the Japanese version, "Aslan", is the Turkish word for "lion". It is also phonetically close to "Atlantis", especially in its French transcription as "Aslantes". This is most likely a voluntary source of inspiration, seeing as the two people share a same myth of becoming highly-advanced before vanishing due to a cataclysm.
