The Professor's Journal is the professor's record of the investigation so far. The player can check this to help remember what has happened in the game, aside from the initial reminder when the game is started again.

In Miracle Mask, the professor has a journal for both the present and the past.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask[]

Present[]

Beginning the Investigation[]

US Version

A letter from a dear friend compelled me to travel to Monte d'Or, a city in the heart of the desert.

When we arrived, Emmy went off to conduct her own inquiries, while Luke and I will explore the parade. The city traffic is strictly regulated, so I shall have to part with the Laytonmobile for a while, painful as it is.

I feel as if we are simply waiting for something to happen.

UK Version

A letter from an old friend of mine has compelled me to travel to the city of Monte d'Or, at the heart of the desert. We'd hardly set foot in town before Emmy shot off to conduct her own enquiries. In the meantime, Luke and I are going to see the street parade. The city traffic is strictly regulated, so I have had to part with the Laytonmobile for a while, painful as it is.

For now, I think we are all just waiting to see what will happen next.

A Brilliant Carnival[]

US Version

We have arrived in Monte d'Or in the midst of some impressive festivities.

It's incredible that in just 18 years, this town has grown from nothing more than a small hotel into what we see today. The sheer size of the community is delightfully baffling.

The celebration is kicking into high gear, and I believe I see a clown in need of help...

UK Version

We have arrived in Monte d'Or in the midst of some spectacular festivities. The city really is quite incredible, considering it started its life as a small hotel and grew to its current size in a mere 18 years. It is baffling to think how many people must have moved here to create such a large community.

We plan to watch the parade, which will begin presently, but not before stepping in to aid a clown in distress.

Petrified Crowd[]

US Version

It began with a scream. Seconds later, the jubilant crowd was a throng of chaos and confusion. Witnesses claim they saw human beings turn to stone. We made our way to the scene where the statues stood.

I assume this is what Angela was referring to in her letter. It looks like our investigation is already well under way.

UK Version

A single scream at the centre of the carnival threw the crowd into chaos. The spectators began to flee all around us and there were shouts about people being turned to stone. We rushed to the scene and, sure enough, there lay life-sized stone statues, looking just like petrified people.

A strange masked character appeared, claiming responsibility for the deed, which he called a "grand miracle". He took flight, but we have determined to chase him down.

In Pursuit of the Gentleman[]

US Version

We pursued this so-called Masked Gentleman on horseback but were unable to catch him.

Emmy's investigation turned up only rumors and conjecture. Our only way of clarifying the details is to speak to Angela directly.

UK Version

We pursued the Masked Gentleman, as he called himself, but even on horseback we could not keep up with a flying quarry.

I am inclined to believe that the strange event we witnessed was one of the "terrifying incidents" that Angela mentioned in her letter. Emmy's investigations revealed that the Masked Gentleman has been performing these so-called miracles for a few weeks now, but we will need to speak to Angela to get the whole story.

The Museum Remains Closed (US)/The Gallery is Off Limits (UK)[]

US Version

After bumping into an old friend who was as eager to share advice as ever, we continued to the marquee. Amid the festival debris, we found a young girl who was lost.

After reuniting the girl with her mother, we set off for the museum, only to find it closed...the result of another one of the Masked Gentleman's acts.

UK Version

After bumping into an old friend eager as ever to share advice. we continued to the marquee. Amid festival debris, we came across a clown balloon in a very sorry state. It even seemed to be sobbing in self-pity. The real source of the wailing, however, was a young lady who had lost her mother in all the panic and needed our assistance.

Mother and child reunited, we set off for the Ledore mansion. On the way, we passed an art gallery, but discovered it to be closed due to a prior incident: another of the Masked Gentleman's miracles.

Guy and the Con Artists (US)/Jean-Paul and the Swindlers (UK)[]

US Version

On our way to the residential district, Emmy received a lovely handcrafted toy robot that looks as if it will provide us with hours of fun.

As we neared the gates to the Ledore mansion, we were accosted in the street by an unsavory character. A second man stepped in to mediate our battle, but I strongly suspect he was also in on the act. We shall have to be wary of more than just the Masked Gentleman.

UK Version

On our way to the residential district, we have had quite our share of adventures. Emmy received a lovely handcrafted wind-up robot, which should afford us hours of fun.

Then, as we neared the gates to the Ledore estate, we were accosted by an unsavory character in the street. A second man stepped in to mediate our dispute, but I strongly suspect that the two were in league. We shall have to be wary of more than just the Masked Gentleman.

Angela's Dilemma (US)/Angela at her Wits' End (UK)[]

US Version

It has been 18 long years since I last spoke to Angela, and I was sorry to find her in a state of understandable anxiety.

Apparently, Henry found a wealth of riches with the Mask of Chaos in the ruins...both of which proved to be integral to the creation of Monte d'Or.

With Henry gone for the evening, we have tabled further discussion until tomorrow. I would like to search the area again where the statues stand.

UK Version

It has been 18 long years since I last spoke to Angela. I was sorry to find her nerves so frayed, though it is understandable in the circumstances. She explained that Henry, to whom she is married, found the Mask of Chaos along with mountains of riches while searching for Randall in the ruins. Evidently, he has used this wealth to build the city of Monte d'Or.

Since Henry is out, we plan to retire for the night and come back tomorrow. I'd just like to return to the scene of the petrification miracle first.

The Masses Amassed[]

US Version

As we arrived at the scene of the statue incident, an officer tried to prevent us from tampering with evidence. He believes the hoofprints left behind to be those of the perpetrator. I hadn't the heart to tell him those tracks were our own.

Few witnesses seem to be willing to come forward. And with the constant foot traffic, there seems no feasible way to conduct a thorough examination. We have been told of an establishment in the merchant district that may have some information for us...

UK Version

As we arrived at the scene of the petrification incident, an officer rushed over to prevent us from disturbing the evidence. He had found hoofprints which he believed had been left by the culprit. I hadn't the heart to tell him those tracks were ours.

It seems few witnesses have come forward, and with the constant foot traffic, a thorough examination of the scene will be difficult. We do have one lead, though: one of the local shopkeepers is apparently well informed about the town's comings and goings.

The Information Seller (US)/A New Source (UK)[]

US Version

The festivities here in Monte d'Or are back in full force, almost as if nothing has happened.

We found the shop we were seeking, a boutique in the merchant district, and spoke to the owner, Madame Lapushka.

She is convinced that these "dark miracles" are nothing more than charades. I think we've gathered enough information for tonight.

UK Version

Whether through insouciance or just determination to have fun, the tourists are crowding the streets of Monte d'Or again, enjoying the festivities as if nothing had happened.

We tracked down the shop we sought, a costume boutique in the shopping district, and spoke to the owner, Ludmilla. Though unable to explain the Masked Gentleman's methods, she seems certain that his miracles are nothing more than clever tricks. I think we've gathered enough information for tonight.

A Night at the Dromedary (US)/A Night at the Camel's Hump (UK)[]

US Version

Tyrone, the ringmaster of the One-Ring Circus, met us in front of the Dromedary. After Luke accepted responsibility for a cute rabbit with motivational concerns, we were shown to our rooms.

It will be very difficult to track down the Masked Gentleman during a carnival in a city this size.

I believe I may have to tell Luke and Emmy a bit about my past for the sake of the investigation.

UK Version

As we approached the Camel's Hump hotel, we encountered the ringmaster of the Stellar Circus, Monte d'Or's circus troupe. After finding ourselves entrusted with a rabbit who aspires to learn the dramatic arts, we finally entered the hotel and were promptly shown to our rooms.

Now that we have time to sit back and think, I have to wonder how we will find the Masked Gentleman during a carnival in a city this size. I think I shall have to tell Emmy and Luke about Randall, for the sake of the investigation.

Good Morning, Monte d'Or[]

US Version

The carnival continued through the break of dawn. By the time we awoke, the clamor had still not subsided.

After recapping yesterday's events, we set off for the Ledore estate to speak with Henry.

Another reunion awaits me, but I fear this time we may not receive the warmest of welcomes...

UK Version

It seemed as through the carnival carried on throughout the night, for when we awoke, bright and refreshed, the streets were as busy as ever.

After reviewing yesterday's events, we prepared to set off once more for the Ledores' mansion to hear Henry's take on the recent events in Monte d'Or. Another reunion awaits me, but I fear that this time we may not receive the warmest of welcomes...

The Lost Little Girl[]

US Version

As soon as we left the hotel, we again encountered the little girl we helped the night before! She had once more become separated from her mother.

I think the most promising location to look for her mother is where the two were initially separated. If the mother is still hunting for the girl in Carnival Square, I cannot in good faith continue the investigation until the pair are reunited.

UK Version

No sooner had we left the hotel than we bumped into the little girl whom we helped last night. In an unfortunate turn of events, she seems to have got lost again!

With her mother no doubt frantic with worry, we cannot in good faith continue our investigation until the pair are reunited. I think the most promising location to look is the place where mother and daughter separated, on Celebration Boulevard.

Exodus from Stansbury[]

US Version

While on the way to Carnival Square to help little Cookie, I spied a face that hadn't changed one bit since I was a wide-eyed schoolboy!

It appears that Esther grew tired of Stansbury and moved to Monte d'Or to start a new life. Seeing so many familiar faces takes me back... I suppose I may meet a few more. Such seems to be the way in the City of Miracles.

UK Version

While on the way to Celebration Boulevard to help little lost Cookie, I spied a face that hasn't changed a bit since I was a wide-eyed schoolboy: Gloria! It appears that sometime after I went to study in London, Gloria moved to Monte d'Or to start a new life.

Seeing these familiar faces again takes me back a long, long way. I wonder if I may not even meet a few more. Such seems to be the way in the City of Miracles.

Mother and Child Reunited[]

US Version

With the help of Sterling and Mordy, we found Cookie's mother.

We can now focus our attention on the Ledores. I'm sure Henry has his hands full, so it's best that we keep the discussion as short as possible.

UK Version

Thanks to a tip from the well-to-do Mr Waltham and further help from Mr Mourdaunt, we finally delivered the child safely to her anxious mother.

With the two happily reunited, we can now return to our investigation and focus out attention on the Ledores. I'm sure Henry will have his hands full, so it's probably best that we keep our visit as short as possible.

Absent Henry[]

US Version

We returned to the Ledore mansion to speak with Henry, but again he was not present. I was not entirely surprised. I assume he is busy attempting to mitigate the damage from last night's events. As the founder of Monte d'Or, he has quite a bit invested here. Not just financially, of course.

Despite Henry's absence, Angela allowed us to investigate his study. She was perfectly decorous throughout, yet I felt there was something rather off about her. I can't quite put my finger on it...

UK Version

We returned to the Ledore mansion to talk to Henry, but he was again not present. I'll admit I was not entirely surprised. Presumably, he's tied up in meetings concerning last night's events. As the founder of Monte d'Or, he bears a great deal of responsibility.

Despite Henry's absence, Angela allowed us to investigate his study. She was perfectly decorous throughout, yet I felt there was something rather off about her. I can't quite put my finger on it.

A Search of the Study (US)/A Thorough Search of the Study (UK)[]

US Version

Having performed a thorough search of Henry's study, we were unable to find anything connected to the Masked Gentleman.

The Mask of Chaos was stolen from his house, but there are no signs of a break-in.

When I asked if she knew of anyone with a grudge against Henry, Angela could only think of Alphonse Dalston, another former resident of Stansbury, as a possible suspect.

UK Version

Having performed a thorough search of Henry's study, we were unable to find anything remotely connected to the Masked Gentleman. The Mask of Chaos was stolen from this house, but there are no signs of a break-in, nor any clues as to who could be responsible.

When I asked Angela if she knew of anyone who might bear a grudge against Henry, she could only think of Alphonse Dalston, another former resident of Stansbury...

Seeing Dalston Again[]

US Version

Dalston's mansion lies past the circus. We visited him today hoping to glean some useful information, but he was as uncooperative as ever. The visit was not entirely uneventful, though.

Dalston has achieved much over the past 18 years. It's quite impressive.

Before leaving, we received a highly unsettling letter. I believe a visit to the police headquarters is in order if we are to crack this case.

UK Version

Château Dalston lies far afield of the Ledore estate, past the Stellar Circus. We stopped by, hoping to interview the master of the house, but he was as uncooperative as ever. Still, it was interesting to meet Dalston again. It seems he has achieved a great deal in the past 18 years through hard work and sheer determination.

Before leaving, we received a highly unsettling letter. I believe a visit to the city hall is in order if we are to crack this case.

At City Hall (US)/The Headquarters at the City Hall (UK)[]

US Version

Just as Dalston said, a special task force has been assembled by Mayor Billson at city hall.

Billson has also requested help from a handful of high-ranking officers from Scotland Yard. I've yet to find out who.

UK Version

Just as Dalston informed us, the city hall is being used as headquarters for a special task force. I hear Monte d'Or has its own police station, but for a case of this magnitude Mayor Williams decided to provide a larger base of operations and call in extra help.

As well as assigning the entire Monte d'Or police force to the case, the mayor has requisitioned some high-ranking officers from Scotland Yard. I've yet to find out who they are.

A Crowded Room (US)/Three's a Crowd (UK)[]

US Version

Inspector Grosky and Detective Bloom of Scotland Yard are now under the command of Chief Sheffield. Well...as much as they can be under anyone's command, anyway.

The mayor implied that there was some bad blood between the officers. Regardless, if they can put their differences aside, they should be able to yield some positive results. I will see if the task force will allow me to lend a hand.

UK Version

Inspector Grosky and the esteemed Detective Bloom have come from Scotland Yard to assist Chief Inspector Sheffield of the local police force with the Masked Gentleman case.

The mayor spoke of bad blood between two of the inspectors, and I must say relations between Sheffield and Bloom seem tense. Still, I believe if they can put their differences aside, the task force should yield some positive results. I am to take part in their strategy meeting shortly.

Horses and Miracles? (US)/On Horses and Miracles (UK)[]

US Version

The briefing began with Detective Bloom's theories on the first incident, where individuals were supposedly turned into horses.

I could find no flaws in his argument, which leads me to believe his solution to be sound. The Masked Gentleman's motive for targeting the parade during its peak hours was, presumably, to incite great fear among the masses.

UK Version

The conference kicked off with Detective Bloom and his theories on the first incident, in which people were transformed into horses.

Although he did not witness the incident himself, his reasoning seems to be sound and I believe his explanation to be fairly conclusive. The Masked Gentleman's motive for targeting the parade during its peak hours was presumably to incite the greatest amount of fear among the masses.

Paintings and Miracles? (US)/On Paintings and Miracles (UK)[]

US Version

Chief Sheffield explained the second incident, in which individuals were said to have stepped out of museum paintings on their way to wreaking havoc across town.

I was able to conclude that it would require both a large number of specifically donated paintings and an exact time frame in which to display them for the paint to vanish after the gallery's closing. A large number of accomplices would also be necessary. Few could coordinate such an elaborate stunt...

UK Version

Next, Chief Inspector Sheffield laid out the details of the second miracle, in which characters seemingly climbed out from paintings and caused havoc in town. We concluded the trick had been executed using a collection of donated paintings which were to be displayed at a specific time so that the paint would vanish just after the gallery's closing time.

Few would be able to coordinate such an elaborate stunt, and a number of accomplices would be necessary. This is worrying...

Combustion and Miracles? (US)/On Flames and Miracles (UK)[]

US Version

The third incident was a public vanishing act. The sight of people disappearing within an inferno would have been terrifying. The Masked Gentleman must have prepared his 13 "victims" well in advance so that they would reveal nothing that might incriminate him, even during an interrogation.

There were no casualties, but that makes this act no less vile. It is now evident that he bears great animosity toward the city of Monte d'Or.

UK Version

The third spectacle, a public vanishing act, was particularly well thought out. The sight of people disappearing in an inferno would have been terrifying. The Masked Gentleman must have prepared his 13 "victims" well in advance so that they could reveal nothing that might incriminate him.

There were no casualties, but there is no denying the pernicious nature of the Gentleman's act. It is now evident that he bears great animosity towards Monte d'Or.

Meeting Adjourned[]

US Version

With the first three "dark miracles" solved, Emmy, Luke, and I turned our attention toward uncovering the mystery of the stone statues.

With the Masked Gentleman's tricks now exposed, the police reopened the museum. We will pick up our investigation there in hopes of finding out more about the Masked Gentleman.

UK Version

Having elucidated the first three miracles, the only miracle left to be explained is that of the stone statues.

This progress has already had a positive effect on the city; with the case of the living paintings now cracked, the police have agreed to reopen the art gallery. We shall pick up our investigation there in the hopes of finding some new leads on the Masked Gentleman.

Hanna and the Cart Tracks (US)/Hannah and the Cart Tracks (UK)[]

US Version

We ran into Hanna on our way to the museum. Apparently she raced to Monte d'Or hot on the heels of Inspector Grosky. She appeared to be gathering information for the inspector.

Her devotion is quite admirable, for a civilian. She explained that the police were concerned about the discovery of some tracks from a horse cart near the statues. I suspect a connection between the two.

UK Version

As we headed towards the art gallery, we had an unexpected encounter with Hannah, who had raced to Monte d'Or on the heels of Inspector Grosky. She appeared to be gathering information for the inspector. Her devotion is quite admirable, for a civilian.

She explained that the police were very interested in the discovery of some cart tracks near the scene of the petrification incident. I must say, that does sound like a promising lead.

Art Donations[]

US Version

Montsarton Gallery was utterly quiet inside. The seized paintings have been replaced by a selection of classics that I should love to examine closer, but art appreciation must wait until another time.

According to the curator, Henry has contributed a number of paintings, which are presently gathering dust on the top floor of the museum's warehouse.

Perhaps Madame Lapushka can tell us a bit more about this...

UK Version

Montsarton Gallery was a quiet oasis, a reprieve from the hubbub of the city. One would never know that anything amiss had happened here. The seized paintings have been replaced by a selection of classics that I should love to examine closer - but art appreciation will have to wait.

According to the curator, Henry contributed several works of art, most of which have not yet been put on display and are presently gathering dust in the warehouse on the top floor. Perhaps Ludmilla from the costume boutique can tell us more...

Madame Lapushka's Advice (US)/Ludmilla Offers Some Advice (UK)[]

US Version

Madame Lapushka was kind enough to enlighten us on the many problems surrounding the continuing development of Monte d'Or. It seems the police force is not fully equipped to handle such a rapidly expanding city.

She also told us that the circus recently rented a large amount of clothes from her boutique. I assume she is referring to the One-Ring Circus, who have a tent near Dalston's estate.

UK Version

Ludmilla was generous enough to enlighten us on the many problems surrounding the continuing development of Monte d'Or. Notably, she was of the opinion that the police force is still too small and too green to handle such a rapidly growing city.

Ludmilla also mentioned that about a month ago, the circus near Château Dalston hired a large quantity of vestments from her boutique. I assume she was referring to the Stellar Circus, which we passed earlier on the way to Dalston's estate.

Ruling Out the Circus (US)/Ruling out the Stellar Circus (UK)[]

US Version

It's evident that the Masked Gentleman needs many hands in order to perform his stunts. Knowing this, I suspected the circus troupe; however, the facts don't support this hypothesis.

With Luke's help, we are going to speak with...well, a tiger. This tiger is close with Dalston, and we shall see what this yields...

UK Version

Based on our knowledge of events thus far, it's evident that the Masked Gentleman needs a large number of helpers in order to perform his stunts. I surmised that the circus troupe might be involved, wearing hired clothing to disguise themselves as ordinary citizens, but after talking to the ringmaster, I have revised my opinion.

We may yet learn something if, with Luke's help, we can extract testimony from the circus's white tiger, whom Dalston frequently visits.

The Tiger's Testimony[]

US Version

We are truly fortunate that Luke is able to speak to animals, for without that, we would never have learned that Dalston was at the circus on the night of the incident with the stone statues.

It appears that Dalston is not our culprit and that he has been cleared of suspicion by Maurice the ferocious. Such a wonderful world!

UK Version

We are truly fortunate that Luke is able to speak to animals, for we might otherwise never have learnt that the circus was performing as usual on the night of the petrification miracle, and that Dalston spent the entire evening there.

If we are to believe Hannibal's testimony, Dalston is not our culprit. We must hope that the real mastermind will fall into our hands tonight.

Evening Descends[]

US Version

By the time we left the circus, night had already fallen. Assuming that the letter we received this morning was not a hoax, the next miracle should take place outside Montsarton Gallery.

I fear that we can expect quite a large crowd.

UK Version

We must have lost track of time in the tent, for when we left, the sun had long since set. If the letter we received this morning was no hoax, the next miracle should take place outside Montsarton Gallery. We can expect it to cause another stir among the crowds.

Looking around, I see nothing to suggest that the Stellar Circus performers are heading to the plaza. I'm fairly certain now that they are not in cahoots with the Masked Gentleman.

Miracle Hunters[]

US Version

By the time we arrived at the plaza, a crowd had already gathered. They looked on with eager eyes, chatting excitedly among themselves.

Angela was present, having received a letter as well. It appears that the Masked Gentleman is targeting those involved with Monte d'Or's economy. But for what purpose?

UK Version

By the time we arrived at the plaza, the crowds had already gathered. They looked on with eager eyes, chatting among themselves - many of them thrill-seekers, no doubt.

Angela was present, having received a letter similar to ours. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Masked Gentleman is targeting the wealthiest citizens of Monte d'Or, those who have invested most in its economy. But for what purpose?

The Levitation Miracle[]

US Version

Once again, the Gentleman presented us with an extravagant performance. Only seconds after his appearance, several individuals were lifted from the ground and shot upward into the sky with no regard for gravity.

Our culprit then declared his next appearance would be at Pumpkin Park. He also issued a request for the Mask of Order, and artifact mentioned in Rutledge's Ancient Histories. I'm not sure what to think of this...

UK Version

Once again, the Masked Gentleman put on an extravagant show. Moments after he appeared, onlookers were lifted off the ground and floated up into the sky, apparently unaffected by gravity.

The villain then announced that his next miracle would be staged in Tingly Town. He claims that the city is cursed and that the only way to save it is to obtain a powerful artefact mentioned in Rutledge's "Ancient Histories": the Mask of Order. Angela seems to believe him, but I remain dubious...

Dalston Apprehended[]

US Version

As soon as the Masked Gentleman fled the scene, Chief Sheffield stormed the plaza with a platoon of men and took Dalston into custody.

His interrogation will be held tomorrow morning. I hope the police will come to their senses by then. At this point, their case seems quite thin.

UK Version

The moment the Gentleman departed the scene, Sheffield stormed the plaza with a platoon of men and, to my great surprise, arrested Dalston. The chief inspector's accusation was that Dalston has long harboured feelings for Angela. Now, whether that claim is true or not, and I have no reason to believe it to be so, it hardly seems sufficient grounds for arrest!

The interrogation will be held tomorrow morning. I hope the police come to their senses by then.

To City Hall (US)/Quickly, to the City Hall (UK)[]

US Version

If the Masked Gentleman's next act is to happen tonight in Pumpkin Park, we must see if there is anything we can do about Dalston's interrogation. We must head to city hall and clear his name as soon as possible.

It would be better for all of us if the police refocused their energy on the real villain...whoever that may be.

UK Version

After levitating members of the crowd and making them vanish into the sky last night, the Masked Gentleman warned us of his next miracle, which is due to take place tonight in Tingly Town.

In the meantime, we have Dalston's interrogation to worry about. We must hurry to the city hall if we are to prove his innocence. It is essential the police stop wasting resources on Dalston and concentrate on the real villain, whoever he may be.

Dalston under Scrutiny (US)/Dalston Under Scrutiny (UK)[]

US Version

The rumors must have spread like wildfire. Everyone in the city seems to know about last night's events.

Detective Bloom claims that the tracks seen near the site of the statues match one of Dalston's carts. I presumed that a cart must have been involved in the incident, but I could never have foreseen this. The cart in question is sitting at the racetrack, so we'll be heading there to investigate further.

UK Version

The rumours must have spread like wildfire, as almost everyone in the city seems to know about last night's events.

Detective Bloom and Chief Inspector Sheffield claim that the cart tracks seen near the site of the statues match a chariot owned by Dalston. I had presumed that a cart was involved in the incident, but this is an unexpected twist. The only other chariots of this type are kept at the racecourse, and they have supposedly been ruled out. Still, I should like to have a closer look at them.

A Clue at the Racetrack? (US)/A Clue at the Racecourse? (UK)[]

US Version

The racetrack we went to investigate was bursting with spectators. I had never before seen carriage races such as these. The carts seem well equipped for a quick getaway.

I would like to investigate one of these carts. Perhaps the manager can assist us.

UK Version

The racecourse we came to investigate was bursting with exultant spectators. I must say I had never before witnessed a chariot race such as this. Compared to standard carts, the chariots look quite robust, making them the ideal choice for handling high speeds - or indeed, heavy loads - but we would need to do a closer inspection to be sure.

Perhaps the manager can assist us here. I have spotted a well-groomed gentleman who may well be the person we are looking for.

The Damaged Cart (US)/Carte Blanche (UK)[]

US Version

The manager of the racetrack, Gustav, informed us that the cart we were looking for had been removed for maintenance just a few days prior to the stone-statue incident.

He was kind enough to grant us permission to explore the grounds as we please.

UK Version

The racecourse manager, Gustav, was not aware of any chariots leaving the grounds, but he admitted they were not all handled under his supervision. I am confident that examining these chariots will lead us to a whole new truth.

We have kindly been granted permission to explore the racecourse grounds as we please, and I intend to make full use of Gustav's generosity.

The Missing Cart (US)/A Cart was Removed? (UK)[]

US Version

The racing carts appear to be sturdily built and capable of transporting large freight. Quite interesting is the fact that each cart can be deconstructed by removing a few bolts, which would allow them to be transported easily.

According to records, a chariot was out for maintenance during the stone-statue incident.

Since Henry must sign any time a cart leaves the premises, we shall check the facts with him.

UK Version

A full examination revealed the racing chariots to be sturdily built and able to support substantial weight. More interesting still was the fact that each chariot could be deconstructed by removing key bolts, allowing them to be transported easily.

The racecourse manager's records show that one chariot was out for maintenance on the day of the petrification incident. The chariots are ultimately Henry's responsibility, so I think we'll have to check the facts with him.

Henry's Odd Behavior (US)/Henry is Behaving Oddly (UK)[]

US Version

It appears the chariot used in the stone-statue incident may have been stolen from the racetrack, or at least taken somewhere else after Henry signed for it. Regardless, something is still very wrong.

Henry directed the police to arrest Dalston, and he has been linked to the major incidents thus far. He has also failed to disclose any real information about the case. I fear that Henry is hiding something.

UK Version

We've come to the conclusion that a chariot was indeed removed from the racecourse in time for the petrification incident, and furthermore, that such an operation could not have been authorised without Henry's written permission. This in itself is troubling, but there's more. It was Henry who directed the police to arrest Dalston, and he has been at the forefront of every major incident we've witnessed thus far. I fear that Henry is hiding something...

Afternoon Tea[]

US Version

I shared my suspicions with Henry today over tea. Even if he is not the mastermind, given his close ties with every incident to date, I had hopes he would offer up some useful information.

Unfortunately, he obstinately refused to tell me anything. I only hope I can get through to him before it's too late.

UK Version

We paid a visit to the Ledore, and over tea I openly shared my doubts and suspicions with Henry. Whether he is the mastermind or not, he seems to have somehow involved in every incident to date, so I had hopes that he might provide some useful information.

Unfortunately, he obstinately refused to tell me anything. I only hope I can break through his shell before it's too late.

Police Aid[]

US Version

We had just left the Ledores' and were en route to Pumpkin Park when we were stopped by an officer.

He has offered to lead us back to Carnival Square, where another officer wishes to talk to us. We are headed there presently, as any piece of information about the Masked Gentleman, no matter how small, may turn out to be crucial.

UK Version

We had just left the Ledores' and were about to head to Tingly Town when we were stopped in mid-stride by an eager-looking constable. He asked if he could escort us back to Celebration Boulevard, where another officer wants to talk to us. I agreed readily. We cannot pass up the opportunity to gain new information about the Masked Gentleman, no matter how insignificant it may seem.

The Racetrack Revisited (US)/Horse Racing Revisited (UK)[]

US Version

The officer who requested our presence was very interested in our horse-riding skills.

We wished him a good day and made our way to The Scorpion upon hearing of a scuffle there.

I am loathe to treat any disturbance in Monte d'Or lightly, knowing the Masked Gentleman is out there somewhere...

UK Version

The officer who wished to speak to us turned out to have a rather unusual request: he had seen us chase the Masked Gentleman on horseback and was hoping for another performance.

Following this, we learnt of what could be a dangerous situation developing at the Scorpion Casino. It isn't the location that the Gentleman expressly mentioned, but we can't afford to treat any disturbance in Monte d'Or lightly, so we will make the casino our next destination.

Murphy Blocks the Way[]

US Version

As we made our way to the casino, we met a man named Murphy. He says he is the accountant for both Dalston and Henry.

Murphy claims the Masked Gentleman's acts are bearing quite a profit for Henry. This is definitely something to be concerned about.

UK Version

On our way to the casino, we found our path obstructed by a man named Murphy. He poured out details of the Ledores' and Dalston's financial affairs and pointed out to us that Dalston's arrest and the Masked Gentlemen's miracles are actually profiting Henry. It's concerning news, to say the least, but we have no time to ponder it now. To the casino!

Trouble at the Casino[]

US Version

It appears that the incident at The Scorpion has nothing to do with the Masked Gentleman. However, it goes against my principles to leave any dilemma unsolved. Once we resolve the problem, we will go directly to Pumpkin Park.

UK Version

From what we've heard on Chance Avenue, the mishap in the Scorpion Casino is not linked to the Masked Gentleman. Though it may no longer seem like the best use of our time, it goes against my principles to leave any dilemma unsolved. Once we resolve the problem, we will go directly to Tingly Town.

An Elegant Solution[]

US Version

The ones causing a stir in the casino were none other than the thug, Frankie, who we met near the Ledore mansion, and his partner, Conner.

We helped Drake, the manager, resolve the issue. Having such a powerful acquaintance on our side may prove to be helpful down the road.

UK Version

The ones causing stir in the casino were none other than Frankie, the confrontational thug we met near the Ledores' mansion, and Narcisse, the mediator who stepped in. The casino's manager, Mr Drake, treated Frankie so unsympathetically as to suggest that such disruptions are quite common. I suspect the situation would have been resolved without our intervention, but Mr Drake expressed his gratitude nonetheless. Having such a powerful acquaintance on our side is guaranteed to be a great asset.

Into Pumpkin Park (US)/Into Tingly Town (UK)[]

US Version

We saw Yukkles, the clown we met earlier by the stone statues, outside of Pumpkin Park.

Everyone here appears to be enjoying themselves, seemingly oblivious to, or perhaps because of, the fact that the Masked Gentleman is set to appear tonight.

For now, we will proceed as planned and perform a quick once-over of the grounds.

UK Version

Tingly Town, the funfair to the north of Monte d'Or, remains in keeping with the ostentatious style of the city. We spoke to Yukkles, the clown we first met by the stone statues, who was hopeful of our solving the case. In fact, everyone here appears to be in high spirits, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the Gentleman will appear tonight.

The situation is a little worrying, but for now we shall proceed as planned and conduct an investigation of the area.

The Masked Gentleman's Message (US)/The Gentleman's Message (UK)[]

US Version

It would be too easy to get fully distracted by the attractions in Pumpkin Park. We must stay focused on the matter at hand.

Inspector Grosky decided to accompany us, but we will have to do without the rest of the police force for now.

We do have a lead to go on and are scouring the park for a clue that could be considered to be "a new spin on the miraculous."

UK Version

It is all too easy to be distracted by the entertainment Tingly Town has to offer, but before we get sidetracked, it is imperative that we pout a stop to the Masked Gentleman's ungracious acts.

Having faith in our predictions, Inspector Grosky has arrived to investigate, but we will have to do without the rest of the police force for now. Still, we have a lead to go on and are scouring the funfair for "a new spin on the miraculous". I expect the attractions will be the key to this riddle.

Results of the Scavenger Hunt[]

US Version

Concealed within the major attractions were messages left behind by the Masked Gentleman.

After some deliberation, we made our way to Topsy Tower, the control tower in the north end of the park.

His intention may be to show us a spectacle from the tower's apex, as it overlooks the entire park. But what exactly does he have in mind?

UK Version

Concealed within each of the funfair attractions were parts of a message left by the Masked Gentleman. Put together, the cards formed a map pointing to Tingly Tower, the control tower to the north of the funfair.

The Masked Gentleman's intention may be to show us a spectacle from the tower's apex, as it overlooks the entire park. But what exactly does he have in mind?

Henry Joins the Hunt[]

US Version

Henry and Angela arrived just as we were making our way to Topsy Tower.

I was a bit taken aback by Angela's presence, as the Henry I knew would never have risked putting her in danger.

I fear the Masked Gentleman is headed for the power supply. We must stop him!

UK Version

As we were about to set off for Tingly Tower, Henry and Angela arrived on the scene offering to aid us in apprehending the Gentleman. After some discussion, they decided to accompany us to the tower. Henry appears genuinely worried about the Gentleman's actions, but it seems most unlike him to allow Angela to put herself in danger as well...

In any case, we are out of time. We have to stop the Gentleman before he is able to shut off the power to Tingly Town!

The Great Disappearance[]

US Version

Topsy Tower was pitch dark inside. This tower controls the park's tower; however, the Masked Gentleman made sure that no lights were on here.

Upon leaving the tower, we found the entire park deserted! We heard the Masked Gentleman's voice somewhere off in the distance.

I cannot conceive how such a feat could be possible. Words cannot express my disbelief.

UK Version

The inside of Tingly Tower was black as pitch, forcing us to rely on voice to guide each other. It is this tower that supplies power to the park, but how the Masked Gentleman could find his way in the dark is anybody's guess.

On leaving the tower, we found to our amazement that the entire park has become deserted. Only the Gentleman's voice resounded through the still and sombre park. I cannot conceive how such a feat could be possible.

The Great Reappearance[]

US Version

The Masked Gentleman eluded us yet again and left us with the announcement that we would be able to see his next act from anywhere in the city.

Our relief was indescribable when the park's patrons reappeared, completely unaware that they had vanished moments earlier.

We have proven these "dark miracles" to be mere stunts thus far. But how can we explain this?

UK Version

The Masked Gentleman escaped our grasp, leaving us with the ominous announcement that we would be able to see his next miracle from anywhere in the city. The scale must be unprecedented!

We were relieved beyond words when the funfair's crowds reappeared, completely unaware that they had only moments ago vanished entirely. Thus far we have disproved all the Gentleman's miracles as stunts. But how can we possibly explain this?

Dawn of the Fourth Day[]

US Version

Last night, the Masked Gentleman appeared before us and claimed that his final miracle would be seen throughout the city.

I wonder if the crowd at Pumpkin Park was even aware of the Masked Gentleman's presence.

UK Version

Last night, the Masked Gentleman appeared before us and claimed that his final miracle would be seen throughout the city. All his miracles to date have involved a large number of people, yet I sense that when alluding to the scale of his final miracle, the Gentleman is not talking about the size of the audience.

I find myself wondering if the crowds at Tingly Town were even aware that the Gentleman had made his appearance...

Back to Dalston's Mansion (US)/Back to Château Dalston (UK)[]

US Version

We had barely begun the fourth day of our investigation when Dalston's butler, Gonzales, requested our presence at Dalston's mansion.

Henry has informed the police about our meeting with the Masked Gentleman, thereby clearing Dalston. It pains me that we could not prove his innocence earlier, but better late than never!

With little else to go on, I am happy to oblige his request and hear what he has to say.

UK Version

We had barely begun our fourth day of investigation when Dalston's butler Gonzales caught us at the hotel entrance with some interesting news: Dalston has been released. Presumably, the police have been informed about our confrontation with the Masked Gentleman.

It pains me that we were not able to clear Dalston's name sooner, but it is a great relief that he was able to leave without incident. With little else to go on, Dalston may be our only lead. We shall visit Château Dalston and hear what he has to say.

Dalston Released (US)/Dalston Liberated (UK)[]

US Version

By the time we arrived at Dalston's home, it was evident that rumors of the Masked Gentleman's appearance in Pumpkin Park had spread far and wide.

Hopefully the police will now focus on apprehending the real Masked Gentleman. Dalston was rightfully upset about being detained, but he agreed to support us however he can. We should be very grateful that he inadvertently aided us in figuring out the trick to the most recent incident.

UK Version

By the time we arrived at Château Dalston, it was evident that rumours of the Masked Gentleman's appearance in Tingly Town had spread thick and fast. Dalston is not entirely off the hook, but at least the police will focus their attention on apprehending the real Masked Gentleman for now.

Dalston was naturally peeved about the whole affair, but he agreed to support us in any way he can. We should be very grateful, in fact, for he has inadvertently aided us in solving last night's miracle.

The Mysterious Guarantor[]

US Version

Drake, from the Scorpion, disclosed some key information to us: Henry was not of legal age at the time of Monte d'Or's inception and thus required a guarantor to carry out his plans.

This guarantor was purportedly a woman, but I'm at a loss as to who she could have been, given that Henry was still working as the Ascots' butler with no known relatives. Whoever she was, she must have been deeply involved in the development of Monte d'Or. Why didn't Henry tell us about this?

UK Version

Mr Drake of the Scorpion Casino has disclosed a very concerning piece of information to us: Henry was not of legal age at the time of Monte d'Or's inception and thus required a guarantor to carry out his plans. Said guarantor was purportedly a woman, but I'm unsure as to who she could have been, given that Henry had no known relatives. Whoever she was, she must have been deeply involved in the development of Monte d'Or. Why didn't Henry tell us about this?

The Mystery of Pumpkin Park (US)/The Mystery of Tingly Tower (UK)[]

US Version

A reexamination of Topsy Tower revealed a back door that opened upon a perfect replica of Pumpkin Park!

Under the veil of darkness, the Masked Gentleman tricked us into thinking we had exited through the same door we entered.

But why would he go to such lengths to show only the five of us such an elaborate trick?

UK Version

A re-examination of Tingly Tower revealed a back door which opened upon a perfect duplicate of Tingly Town. Under the veil of darkness, it was all too easy for the Gentleman to trick us into thinking we had exited the tower via the same door as we had entered through.

What baffles me most is why he would go to such lengths to show only the five of us his elaborate trick. The only thing we can be sure of is the conviction with which he carries out his acts.

Straight from Murphy's Mouth[]

US Version

As we left Topsy Tower, we bumped into Murphy, the accountant. He told us that Henry's businesses have enjoyed an advantage since Dalston's arrest.

This, coupled with Henry having invested large amounts into city planning, makes me wonder if he was responsible for creating this second park.

UK Version

As we left Tingly Tower, we were approached by Murphy, the financial advisor. He was evidently itching to tell us something, which turned out to be very pertinent indeed. It seems that ever since Dalston's arrest, Henry's businesses have enjoyed a substantial advantage.

I have to wonder: Henry has recently invested large sums into city planning. Could he be responsible for the creation of the second Tingly Town?

Angela's Pendant[]

US Version

Angela is visibly agitated by recent events.

She is convinced that the town could be spared if we appeased the Masked Gentleman's request and somehow procured the Mask of Order.

I don't quite know how, but Angela has changed. She mentioned that her pendant was old...but she has always treasured this item dearly. Either she has changed dramatically, or something is afoot.

UK Version

Angela is becoming visibly weary with recent events, not least last night's miracle. She is convinced that the town could be spared the Gentleman's tricks if we only had the Mask of Order, but it seems to me that she is deluding herself.

I don't quite know why, but Angela has changed. In a perfectly nonchalant manner, she told me she had lost her pendant, a pendant that I remember her treasuring dearly in the past. Either she has changed dramatically over the past 18 years, or something is afoot.

Henry Remains Reticent[]

US Version

After last night's miracle, Henry has taken an even more obstinate stance toward us. We know that there are only a handful of people capable of constructing such a large-scale stunt.

He must know that he is a top suspect, as he has approved the expansion of several city facilities.

UK Version

Since last night's miracle, Henry has taken an even more obstinate stance towards us. We know that there are only a handful of people capable of orchestrating such a large-scale stunt. Perhaps he fears that he has come under suspicion, as the one who ordered the expansion of the city facilities. He seems oddly intent on restoring peace to the city without first closing the case.

Lady Ascot Is Alive! (US)/Mrs Ascot is Alive! (UK)[]

US Version

While we were searching Henry's study, who of all people should appear but Mrs. Ascot!

According to her, all of the Ascot fortune was spent on the search for Randall. Apparently, she wouldn't even have a roof over her head had Henry not come to her aid.

This must be the guarantor whom Drake was referring to.

UK Version

We were busy examining Henry's study, when who should appear but Mrs Ascot, Randall's mother!

She told us of how she invested so much money in the search for her missing son that the Ascot family riches dwindled to nothing and the name faded into obscurity. She would not even have a roof over her head if not for Henry. Based on this, I am inclined to believe that the female guarantor Mr Drake mentioned was, in fact, Mrs Ascot.

The Ownership of Monte d'Or[]

US Version

I can now say with conviction that, although I previously considered Henry's actions inexplicable, they were, in truth, entirely justified.

All this time, Henry has been working to protect Monte d'Or so that it is ready for Randall's return.

As the city's guardian, Henry is just as devoted to repairing the town as the Masked Gentleman is to damaging it.

UK Version

Even with Henry's permission, it troubles my conscience to pry into his private affairs. However, the information I've uncovered casts a new light on Henry's previously inexplicable actions.

The whole time, he has simply tried to protect Monte d'Or and keep it ready for Randall's return. As the city's guardian, Henry has been determined to remove any sign of the havoc caused by the Masked Gentleman.

Lingering Doubts[]

US Version

Chief Sheffield still suspects Dalston. I suppose this is natural, given the circumstances...and his need to protect the reputation of his force.

Sheffield informed us that Detective Bloom seems to have found some evidence at the racetrack. We are headed there now to meet him.

UK Version

Chief Inspector Sheffield still harbours suspicion towards Dalston - a natural response given the unlikelihood that somebody else could have operated unnoticed for so long under the vigilant eye of the Monte d'Or police force.

The chief inspector informed us that Detective Bloom has found some crucial evidence at the racecourse. If we make haste, we may yet find him there.

What Is the Reunion Inn? (US)/The Reunion Inn (UK)[]

US Version

It is now late afternoon, and we cannot afford to waste any time if we are to put an end to this.

Inspector Grosky claims that the Masked Gentleman is somewhere inside the Reunion Inn.

I think we still need to speak with Detective Bloom at the racetrack.

UK Version

It is now evening, and we can no longer afford to waste any time if we are to put an end to the Masked Gentleman's tricks. Inspector Grosky, determined as ever to make an arrest, claims that the Gentleman has appeared at a place called the Reunion Inn.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. First, we shall hurry to the racecourse to talk to Detective Bloom.

The Excellent Inspector[]

US Version

Bloom believes that the Masked Gentleman is indeed after the Mask of Order, and that he is currently hiding somewhere in the Reunion Inn.

If his primary objective is to damage Henry, then it's clear that he must bear some personal grudge.

All suspicion aside, we must find the Masked Gentleman as soon as we possibly can.

UK Version

Detective Bloom firmly believes that the Masked Gentleman is after the Mask of Order and that he is currently hiding out somewhere in the Reunion Inn. I've come to a similar conclusion.

If the Gentleman's primary objective is to cause detriment to Henry, then it follows that he bears some deeply ingrained resentment towards him. In any case, we must seek out the Gentleman as soon as we possibly can.

The Heart of Monte d'Or[]

US Version

The city of Monte d'Or grew from a very modest little inn. However, the Reunion Inn is now a sprawling hotel complex of such grandeur that it left us breathless.

Henry gave the hotel its name in the hope that he and Randall would one day meet there, but there is now a shadow cast over this beacon of hope.

The Masked Gentleman is inside there somewhere. We must find him!

UK Version

The city of Monte d'Or grew from a very modest little inn. Today, the Reunion Inn is a sprawling hotel complex of such grandeur that it left us breathless.

Henry gave the hotel its name trusting that he and Randall would one day meet there, but now a shadow hangs over this place of hope. The Masked Gentleman is inside and he is no doubt putting the last details of his final miracle into place. We must stop him!

Proprietor of the Reunion Inn (US)/Manager of the Reunion Inn (UK)[]

US Version

Apparently, Mordy is actually the manager of the Reunion Inn. He seems to have remarkably accurate and extensive knowledge of the case of the Masked Gentleman, including the suspicion cast upon Henry.

He has been helping us navigate the hotel and now wishes to show us a place that he says will be of special interest to us.

UK Version

It came as a surprise to all to discover that Mr Mordaunt, a man often seen hurrying around the city on various errands, is actually the manager of the Reunion Inn. Whoever his sources are, he seems to have remarkably accurate and extensive knowledge of the case - he even knows of my doubts regarding Henry. How lucky we are to have him as a guide!

He wishes to show us a place that may be of interest to us, and I am inclined to follow.

Henry's Secret[]

US Version

Mordy took us to Henry's office, located in a secluded section of the Reunion Inn. One part of the wall was precisely, down to the finest detail, a copy of the wall that Randall sketched his notes on 18 years ago.

It may be that, even to this day, Henry continues to search for Randall.

Emmy and Luke are examining the study while Mordy and I search the storage room.

UK Version

The place that Mr Mordaunt wished us to see was Henry's office, located in a secluded section of the Reunion Inn. One part of the wall was precisely as it had been in Randall's room 18 years ago. It may be that even to this day, Henry continues his search for Randall...

Given their excellent observational skills, I have left Emmy and Luke to examine the office. In the meantime, Mr Mordaunt and I will search the records room.

Concealed among the Records[]

US Version

I found something in the storage room that defied all of my expectations: the Mask of Chaos itself!

Meanwhile, Emmy and Luke found the expedition team's log of their search for Randall. Putting two and two together, I have established a theory that connects the mask and the blueprints I found.

I don't believe the Masked Gentleman is aware of this room. Everything is now clicking into place.

UK Version

I went to search the records room looking for information, and came across something that defied all my expectations: the Mask of Chaos itself! Meanwhile, Emmy and Luke found a log written by the expedition team that searched for Randall. Putting two and two together, I have established one possible theory that connects the mask and the city plans that I found in the records. I don't believe the Masked Gentleman was aware of this room. After coming here, everything has begun to click into place.

A Letter to the Lobby (US)/An Unexpected Gift (UK)[]

US Version

I received a letter from the Masked Gentleman, accompanied by a cryptic storybook. Clearly he had been expecting us. I'll let him have his fun as we follow his clues, but this won't last for long.

I'm sure he's behind the blackout as well.

UK Version

After escorting us back to the lobby, Mr Mordaunt gave me a cryptic story book that was undoubtedly left for me by the Masked Gentleman. Clearly, he has been expecting us and left the book as some sort of message. No doubt he is also responsible for the hotel's sudden blackout.

The Book and the Fairy Tale[]

US Version

The book that the Gentleman had left for us contained part of what appears to be a fairy tale.

It clearly alludes to something of grave importance, but what? I follow that the boy in the tale is a mouthpiece for the Masked Gentleman, but what is he trying to say, exactly?

We must participate in his little game until it reaches its eventual conclusion.

UK Version

The book that the Masked Gentleman left for us contained part of what appears to be a fairy tale. It alludes to something of grave importance, but what? I follow that the boy in the tale acts as a mouthpiece for the Masked Gentleman, but exactly what he is trying to convey remains a mystery.

The text also gives hints indicating another location. I fear we shall have to participate in the Masked Gentleman's little game until its conclusion.

The Boy and His Dog (US)/The Boy and his Dog (UK)[]

US Version

We found a second book in one of the hotel suites. This one tells a tale of a boy and his dog. It seems very simple, but clearly there is some deeper meaning here.

The tone of this story is very different from the previous one, leaving me with the impression that our masked mastermind is afraid of being betrayed or abandoned.

Or perhaps such things have already occurred?

UK Version

We found a second book in one of the hotel suites, a tale concerning a boy and his dog. It seems at first glance to be a perfectly ordinary fairy tale, but it must hold some deeper meaning for the Gentleman.

The tone of this story is very different from the last, leaving me with the impression that our masked mastermind is afraid of betrayal and abandonment. Perhaps he has already suffered these things?

Connecting the Dots[]

US Version

The facts are finally fitting into place. It seems that I was not the only one to suspect Henry of some sort of wrongdoing.

The Masked Gentleman's bitterness runs far deeper than any of us could have imagined. Unless we get to the bottom of this, Henry's life's work will be destroyed.

I hope there is still time to resolve this situation.

UK Version

The vague and fragmented facts are finally slotting into place in my mind. The jigsaw is almost complete.

It seems that I was not the only one to wrongly suspect Henry - but the Masked Gentleman's bitterness runs far deeper than any of us could have imagined. Unless we lift the veil of mistrust, all Henry's devotion will be for naught, and there will be no way to pick up the broken pieces. I pray that we have time to convince the Gentleman of his grave misunderstanding.

Declaration of Betrayal[]

US Version

The elaborately decorated book we discovered in the Grand Hall held a story of betrayal. I am beginning to believe that we are putting together the pieces of the Masked Gentleman's life.

The truth is becoming very cloudy, for everyone and on all levels. I will go to the auditorium, as I believe that is where we are being directed to...

We must speak with him.

UK Version

The elaborately decorated book we discovered in the Grand Hall told the story of a chancellor who had committed treason. I am beginning to believe that the entire tale loosely weaves together key events in the Masked Gentleman's life. It's essential that I make him aware of his mistake, but I fear that will be difficult, when he has deluded himself for so long.

Still, this is no time to waver. I will go to the auditorium, as the books indicate, and try to talk sense into him.

Confrontation in the Auditorium[]

US Version

The Gentleman was waiting for us in the auditorium, his despair on full display. I do not understand his anger, and his willingness to imperil the safety of an innocent boy has drained me of all patience.

If Luke had fallen from that rope, I would never have been able to forgive myself!

UK Version

The Gentleman was lying in wait for us in the auditorium. He must have been waiting patiently, biding his time on that forgotten stage, all to show us - to show someone - his despair.

I feel for him, but he must be truly misguided to act as he did next, putting an innocent boy in danger. If Luke had fallen from that rope, I could never have forgiven myself!

Randall's Return[]

US Version

I was hoping that my suspicions would turn out to be wrong, but the Masked Gentleman is, indeed, Randall. After falling into the depths of Akbadain, he spent 18 years attempting to remember his past. It seems likely that when the returned to Stansbury, he heard some vicious rumors concerning Henry.

From a single bud, the thorns of hatred grew larger and more tangled by the day to the point that, for him, the destruction of Monte d'Or became not an atrocity, but a necessity.

UK Version

As I have suspected for some time, the Masked Gentleman is Randall. After falling into the depths of Akbadain, he spent 18 years in forgetfulness until he received a letter that detailed his past. This letter told pernicious tales of Stansbury's decline and Henry's betrayal. It was from this that Randall's animosity for Henry stemmed.

With each subsequent letter, the thorns of hatred grew more tangled, to the point where the downfall of Monte d'Or seemed to Randall not an atrocity, but a necessity.

Avalanche of Sand[]

US Version

Randall intends to bury the city in an avalanche of sand. He has detonated explosives in the rocky cliffs surrounding the city!

We have precious little time before sand engulfs the city. I think raising the level of the city may allow us to avert disaster.

If my prediction is wrong, then the city is doomed. I hope I am right...

UK Version

Randall intends to bury the city in an avalanche of sand. He has detonated explosives in the rocky cliffs surrounding the city, causing sand to pour down. We have precious little time before the city is engulfed.

Catching Randall must wait - we must first save Monte d'Or. If we can find a way to raise the city higher than ground level, we may yet avert disaster. I have reason to believe this is possible, but if my prediction is wrong, this place may be buried in sand forever.

Detective Bloom Flees[]

US Version

Inspector Grosky and Chief Sheffield agreed to handle the evacuation, leaving us free to deal with the incoming sand. Detective Bloom is nowhere to be found.

I believe that both the mask and the blueprints to the city are the keys to saving Monte d'Or.

UK Version

After a brief encounter with Inspector Grosky, we spoke to Chief Inspector Sheffield, who agreed that the police would help escort the people to safety while we found a way to stop the sand's infiltration. I believe that both the mask and the blueprints to the city are the keys to saving Monte d'Or.

On another note, I would never have expected Detective Bloom to flee during such a crisis. I had thought him a more responsible individual.

A Way to Save the City[]

US Version

The sand has not yet reached the monument, but it soon will. Angela again mentioned the Mask of Order... Soon she will see where it has been all this time. The mask can wait for now, however.

We must find a passage into the ruins in order to save Monte d'Or.

UK Version

The sand has not yet reached the monument, but it soon will. Angela seemed very worried about where the Mask of Order might be, but as it happens, I already know the precise location. It is hidden in plain view, where none of us would have thought to look.

The mask can wait for now. We need to find a passage into the ruins and venture down to solve the puzzle that awaits us.

Reconciliation (US)/A Gentleman's Agreement (UK)[]

US Version

With no time for explanations, everyone seems to be in a state of shock. Henry is especially disheartened to discover that Randall is the Masked Gentleman.

Both Henry and Dalston have gone after Randall. We are approaching the final chapter.

UK Version

Dalston turned up, alarmed at the san pouring into the city, but there was no time to explain the situation in detail.

Henry is in a terrible state now that he has learnt of the Gentleman's true identity, and even Dalston seems quite shaken by the news. The two have temporarily set aside their differences and set off together to catch Randall.

Underground Descent[]

US Version

There was a manhole behind the city monument. I presume that this leads to the path the expedition team once used to enter the ruins. If their records and the city blueprints are correct, Monte d'Or rests directly on top of an ancient Azran crest.

If we have the true Mask of Chaos, I believe we will unlock the mystery surrounding not just one but both of the masks.

UK Version

Behind the monument lay a manhole, which I presume leads to the path the expedition team once used to enter the ruins. If their records and the city blueprints are anything to go by, Monte d'Or lies directly over the Azran ruins, and this path will take us to the heart of those ruins.

If we really have the true Mask of Chaos, I believe we will finally come to the crux of the mystery surrounding not just one mask, but both of them.

The Two Masks[]

US Version

Two keys are required to solve the final puzzle of the ruins. Angela believed these keys were the Mask of Chaos and the Mask of Order. She was partly right.

The mask Randall found in the ruins was real, but in 18 years, he never discovered its secret: that order and chaos have been two parts of one whole.

UK Version

In order to solve the final puzzle of the ruins, two keys are required. Angela believed these were two individual masks, the Mask of Chaos and the Mask of Order, but I realise now there's more to it. The mask Randall found in the ruins was real, but in 18 years, he never discovered the secret it concealed. All this time, order and chaos have been two parts of the one whole.

Monte d'Or Rises[]

US Version

It seems that the Azran used this final chamber as a control room of sorts. Now the ruins have risen from beneath the earth, back to the position they once occupied so many millennia ago.

With barely any change to its topography, the entire city of Monte d'Or is now elevated above the sand.

The ruins may have contained treasure; however, they were the true treasure all this time.

UK Version

It seems evident to me now that in their time, the Azran most probably used the final chamber as a control mechanism of sorts. Now the ruins are rising from the earth, back to the position they occupied many millennia ago. With barely any change to its topography, the entire city of Monte d'Or now sits above the sand, raised by the ruins it was built upon. Whatever riches they may have contained, the true treasure has always been the ruins themselves.

Randall Defeated[]

US Version

Randall has changed considerably over these 18 years. It's understandable that he believed the stories about Henry. He was quite vulnerable, after all.

I do sympathize with him; however, I cannot very well forgive his actions. I hope to bring him some peace now that the city is safe.

I shall explain the situation to him so that he may put his past behind him for good.

UK Version

Randall has changed over the past 18 years. Lost and vulnerable, he had little choice but to believe the scathing rumours he was told about Henry and the fate of Stansbury, and his bitterness is understandable.

I cannot lightly forgive his actions. However, I do hope to bring him a little peace. Now that the city is safe, I shall tell him all I know in the hope that I can dispel his misconceptions once and for all.

Descole's Objective[]

US Version

There was one key element that allowed me to distinguish Angela from Descole: when Angela first called me to Monte d'Or, she had suspicions of who the Masked Gentleman really was.

But Descole overlooked this detail and acted out an Angela who was intent simply on finding the Mask of Order with no thought of her past love.

He orchestrated the whole situation, manipulating Randall the whole way. But what was he after?

UK Version

There was one key element that allowed me to distinguish Angela from Descole: when Angela first summoned me to Monte d'Or, she already had her suspicions of who the Masked Gentleman really was. But Descole, overlooking this vital detail, impersonated an Angela who was intent on finding the Mask of Order, with no thought of her past love.

It was Descole who orchestrated the whole thing, manipulating Randall as he pleased to further his own ends. But what exactly is he after?

The 18-Year Reunion (US)/The 18 Year Reunion (UK)[]

US Version

One at a time, I unmasked the lies that Randall has been led to believe. I can only hope he will respond to the truth and accept the grace offered him by Henry, Angela, and his mother.

Randall has been through quite a traumatic experience. Still, remembering how determined and brave he was in our youth, I hope he'll be able to start a new life.

It looks like Henry's lifelong wish has been granted.

UK Version

One at a time, I exposed the lies that Randall has been led to believe. I can only hope that he will respond to the truth and to Henry, Angela and Mrs Ascot's heartfelt emotions. To discover his hometown and legacy abandoned and forgotten must have been a tremendous shock. Still, recalling how brave he was in our youth, I'm hopeful he'll be able to start afresh. Henry never stopped searching for his lost friend, and with a little luck, his fondest wish may be granted.

Monte d'Or, City of Miracles[]

US Version

I was able to save Randall this time, but only with Henry's help, thankfully.

Monte d'Or truly is a city of miracles, a place where friends may be united after years of separation.

When we arrive back in London, I look forward to hearing about Randall's progress.

I owe all of my friends a great deal--not the least of which was introducing me to archaeology!

UK Version

This time, I was able to save Randall. Not only from the physical crevasse that opened up below us, but also from the deep, emotional abyss into which he plunged those 18 years ago. Monte d'Or truly is a city of miracles, a place where friends are reunited, no matter how great the gulf. Randall can bury the years he has lost and begin his life afresh.

Once we're back in London, I look forward to writing to my old friends in Monte d'Or. I owe them a great deal, not least for introducing me to archaeology!

Past[]

Randall Never Listens (US)/Randall is a Pighead (UK)[]

US Version

Randall bested me at fencing practice today, so it looks as though I'll be joining him on his next archaeological adventure. I don't even like archaeology, and he knows it!

He thinks everyone should love archaeology as much as he does, but I do wish he'd give it a rest now and then. Ah well, I'm sure it will be a fun and worthwhile trip, regardless!

UK Version

Randall bested me at fencing practice today, so it looks as though I'll be joining him on his "archaeological adventure". I don't even like archaeology and he knows it! I suppose he's just so enthusiastic he thinks everyone else will love archaeology in time, but I wish he'd give it a rest now and then. Ah well, knowing me, I'll probably just let myself get swept up in it, as always.

Class, as Always[]

US Version

Today's lesson was about the Azran civilization. I hadn't heard of it, but of course Randall had!

He couldn't help himself from interrupting class repeatedly with his questions. I think old Collins was a bit peeved.

UK Version

Today's lesson was about the Azran civilisation. I hadn't heard of it but, of course, Randall had - I could tell by the smug look on his face! He was so keyed up, he kept interrupting the class with his questions. I think old Collins was a bit peeved.

Phew! What a tiring day. Don't I have anything good to write about?

Enough with the Questions![]

US Version

Sometimes I feel like Randall is deliberately antagonizing Mr. Collins. Is that really necessary?

I just wish he'd be a bit less of a blockhead sometimes. The next time we spar with one another, I'm going to have to teach him a lesson!

UK Version

Mr Collins's lessons are usually quite enjoyable and he's fairly laid back, for a teacher. So why does Randall always have to stick his oar in and ask really complicated questions? The rest of us have to sit around like lemons and listen to him. I just wish he'd be a bit less of a blockhead sometimes.

And we'll have to cut practice short this afternoon, so it'll be next week before I can teach him a lesson. Maybe I should race him home instead.

Meeting at Randall's (US)/Randall Time Begins at 8 (UK)[]

US Version

Even when Angela is around, Randall can't stop raving about archaeology. You'd think he'd have other things to talk about with his girlfriend! She doesn't seem to mind, though.

I think she's going to Randall's tonight as well. To be honest, I'd rather just stay home and read, but I promised...

Right! Enough diary for now! Maybe I can get a quick chapter in before I go to Randall's.

UK Version

You know, even when Angela is around, Randall never stops raving about archaeology. You'd think he'd have other things to talk about with his girlfriend! She doesn't seem to mind, though, and I think she's even coming to Randall's "archaeology seminar" this evening. To be honest I'd rather read my book tonight, but since I lost that fencing bout, I suppose I'm obliged to go. Anyway, I'm sure it won't be so bad in the end. Right, enough diary for now! I'd like to read a good chunk before I go to Randall's.

Mother, Full of Worry (US)/Ma is Such a Worrier! (UK)[]

US Version

When I got home, Mother was quite worked up! She said Father had gone off with some strange men...

She's probably making too much of it all, but it's nearly dinnertime, so I told her I'd go out and look for Father. I'll head up to Pebble Lane first.

UK Version

When I got home, Ma was in a bit of a tizz. Apparently Pa went off with some strange men dressed in black suits and hasn't been seen since.

She's probably making too much of it all, but it's nearly dinner time, so I'd better go out and find Pa in any case. If I go up towards Pebble Lane, there's sure to be someone who's seen him go by.

Father Found! (US)/Pa Located (UK)[]

US Version

With help from quite a few of our neighbors, I finally found Father out near the forest.

He claims those men in black suits were old friends of his, but it does seem a little odd.

Apparently they came to see Norwell, so he gave them the full tour. Anyway, I've been out quite a while now and Mother is probably fretting, so we'd better hurry home.

UK Version

After asking our neighbours without any real luck, I finally tracked down Pa on the path to the forest.

He claims those men in black suits were old friends of his, but it does seem a little odd... Apparently they came to see Norwell, so he gave them the full tour.

Anyway, I've been out quite a while now and Ma's probably fretting, so we'd better hurry home.

Off to Randall's House[]

US Version

The evening has just flown by!

Mother made a pretty good stew for dinner, but I didn't have time for a second helping. I've got to get to Randall's before it's too late.

Better get going! More later!

UK Version

What with wandering round for ages looking for Pa, the evening's just flown by.

Ma made a pretty good stew for dinner, but I didn't even have time for a second helping since I have to go to Randall's. I don't feel very comfortable going to his house this late, especially when his father's at home, but Randall insists it's fine. I'll just have to make it quick.

I'd better get going!

Dalston's Late Stroll (US)/Dalston's Out Late (UK)[]

US Version

I bumped into Dalston on the way to Randall's. I wish he would just drop the act and be a little more normal. He might make a good friend if he did!

Apparently, he and Randall used to spend quite a lot of time together back before I moved here. Perhaps he's jealous of me. I don't know.

I also saw Henry out shopping earlier. He is always hard at work!

UK Version

I bumped into Dalston on the way to Randall's. He's always acting too cool for school, but I can tell he'd like to join our "kiddie adventures", as he calls them.

Apparently, he and Randall used to spend quite a lot of time together back before I moved here. Perhaps he's jealous of me or something.

Oh, and I saw Henry out shopping earlier. He has it pretty hard, having to work all the time like that!

Sneaking in to Randall's (US)/Sneaking into Randall's (UK)[]

US Version

I ran into Angela on top of the hill above Randall's house. We went in our usual secret entrance so as not to alert Randall's father. The last time we used the doorbell, Mr Ascot gave Randall extra study tasks for a week! As if we don't already get enough homework at school.

Henry is good about expecting us when we arrive, which makes things easier!

UK Version

I met Angela on the way over the hill to Randall's house. We went through our usual secret entrance so as not to alert Randall's father. The last time we tried using the front door, Mr Ascot gave Randall extra study tasks for a week! As if we don't already get enough homework at school.

Still, Henry always seems to be expecting us when we arrive, so we're clearly not as cat-like as we'd like to think.

Scrawl on the Wall[]

US Version

Randall's excitement came from something out of Rutledge's Ancient Histories--the Mask of Chaos.

So he was asking Mr. Collins all that stuff about the mask just so he could unveil it to us later! Ah, Randall, always the show-off.

Still, I'm not convinced the mask is the real thing. Randall is pretty adamant that it's genuine, and he showed us a wall in his room covered in rows and rows of cryptic symbols.

UK Version

The discovery Randall was so excited about turns out to be the legendary Mask of Chaos, from Donald Rutledge's "Ancient Histories". Hah! So the only reason he asked Mr Collins all that guff about whether the mask existed or not was so he could unveil it to us later! Ah, Randall, always the show-off. Still, I'm not convinced the mask if even genuine, though Randall is adamant. To prove his findings, he unveiled a wall of his room, covered in rows and rows of cryptic symbols.

To Norwell![]

US Version

Randall showed us a series of symbols that he decrypted from the Norwell wall. How on earth did Randall manage to decipher a text that has baffled archaeology experts for decades?!

It seems that this message led him to the Mask of Chaos. He says he'll explain more when we get to the wall itself.

UK Version

The rows of symbols that Randall revealed to us so dramatically are apparently the secret message of Norwell, which he has decrypted. How on earth did Randall manage to decipher a text that defeated all the archaeology experts?!

Anyway, it seems that it was thanks to the message on the Norwell wall that Randall found the Mask of Chaos. He says he'll explain more once we're standing in front of the wall itself.

Norwell at Night[]

US Version

Heading to Norwell at night with no flashlights may not have been the smartest thing we've ever done. By moonlight, Norwell is quite an eerie place!

That huge wall looming over you, with all of those archaic symbols... Has Randall really deciphered this message from the distant past?

UK Version

Going to Norwell at night is a bigger undertaking than I thought. Maybe they don't expect visitors to the wall at this hour, because the gate to the forest was locked and there was no lighting on the path. By moonlight, Norwell is quite an eerie place! That huge wall looming over you, those strange archaic symbols...

Has Randall really deciphered this message from the distant past? I wonder what it says...

Angela Runs Off[]

US Version

When Randall cracked the Norwell code, he found that the wall was actually a map. It took him to the Mask of Chaos, which he says is a key to finding Akbadain.

This was the last straw for Angela. She immediately snatched the mask from Randall and ran off. I'm helping Randall find her now.

UK Version

When Randall cracked the puzzle of Norwell, he discovered that the wall is engraved with a set of directions leading to a certain location. It was there that he found the Mask of Chaos. He went on to explain, in typical Randall style, that the mask is the key to finding the legendary Akbadain ruins.

Apparently that was the last straw for Angela, though; she snatched the mask from Randall's hands and stormed off in a huff. I hope we can find her!

Angela's Tears[]

US Version

We found Angela on Memory Knoll. She had been crying for quite a bit.

Randall's wild talk about exploring the ruins touched off memories of her brother, who went missing on an archaeological expedition. Still, Randall is as determined as ever. With Henry's help, he managed to convince Angela to let him go, but I just have a bad feeling about this.

UK Version

We found Angela sitting on Memory Knoll, hugging the mask to her chest and sobbing. Randall's wild talk about exploring the ruins had reminded her of her older brother, who went missing on an archaeological expedition. Still, neither Angela's tears nor my arguments seem to have any impact on Randall - he's just as determined as ever to go exploring. With Henry's help, and a promise not to do anything dangerous, he eventually convinced Angela to let him go, but I'm not sure I'm happy with all this.

Before Setting Off...[]

US Version

With Angela's consent, Randall is free to pursue his dreams of archaeological glory. And I am to accompany him, I suppose. Someone has to watch over him, and Henry is tied up by his duties at the Ascot Mansion.

Henry made us all an amazing cup of tea this morning. No wonder Lord Ascot keeps him close!

UK Version

Now that he has Angela's consent, I don't think anything is going to stop Randall from following his foolhardy dreams of archaeological glory, and I'm the muggins who has to accompany him. Well, I suppose he needs somebody to be the voice of reason, and poor Henry is tied up by this duties as Ascot House.

Speaking of Henry, he made us an amazing cup of tea when we got back from the Norwell wall. No wonder Mr Ascot keeps him close!

Day of the Journey[]

US Version

On the morning of our departure, Randall got Henry to bring the horse and cart to the front of the house. He's making quite a spectacle of all this. I though we were sneaking off in secret! Does he realize how difficult it was to get out of the house this morning and not wake anyone up?

Angela turned up at the last second. This gave Randall a bit of a shock, but not even she can slow him down now.

UK Version

On the morning of our departure, Randall got Henry to bring the horse and cart round to the front of the house. He's making quite a pompous spectacle of all this, considering we're meant to be sneaking off in secret! Does he realise how much it cost me to tiptoe out of the house without even a word to Ma?

Angela turned up unexpectedly just as we were leaving and gave Randall a bit of a shock, but not even she could slow him down now.

A Forgotten Civilization (US)/Finding a Forgotten Civilisation (UK)[]

US Version

As Randall steered us toward our destination, it occurred to me that I never bothered to ask where exactly we were going.

Randall explained that it is Thornley's Gorge, deep within the desert. Honestly, it looks like the middle of nowhere on the map. I hope Randall is right about this!

UK Version

As Randall steered us relentlessly towards our destination, it occurred to me that I'd never asked exactly where the Akbadain ruins were.

Randall explained that his research pointed to a place called Thornley's Gorge, deep within the desert. Honestly, it looks like the middle of nowhere on the map. I hope Randall is right about this!

Thornley's Gorge[]

US Version

After hours of driving across the desert, we finally reached Thornley's Gorge and the entrance to the ruins of Akbadain.

We came to the edge of a precipitous ravine, but Randall was unfazed. I hope he remembers his promise to Angela.

I can't deny that I've grown curious about these ancient ruins too, and I'd hate to turn back now. Archaeology does captive the imagination...

UK Version

After hours of driving across the desert, we finally reached Thornley's Gorge, where we hope to find the Akbadain ruins.

We came to the edge of a gigantic, precipitous ravine, but Randall was completely unfazed. I hope he remembers his promise to Angela. That said, I must admit I've grown rather curious about these ancient ruins too, and I'd hate to have to turn back now. Archaeology does have a powerful hold on the imagination...

Into the Akbadain Ruins![]

US Version

After a descent into Thornley's Gorge, we located the entrance to the ruins. The interior seems quite solidly built. I doubt we'll be buried alive, so at least that's something!

It's an eerie place, but Randall's confidence and good humor have helped lighten the mood. I do wonder how he expects us to explore a structure of this size with only one measly shovel, though.

UK Version

After a hairy descent into Thornley's Gorge, we managed to locate the entrance to Akbadain. The interior of the ruins seems solidly built, so at least I'm not too worried about getting buried alive!

It's quite an intimidating place, but Randall's confidence and good humour help to banish all my worries. I do wonder how he expects us to explore a structure of this size armed only with one measly shovel, though.

The Bottomless Ruins[]

US Version

The ruins are full of obstacles and traps, not to mention buried treasures! Randall acts as if they were placed here for his own amusement.

The floor has given way in a few places, but so far we've been able to bridge the gaps using large rocks. With just the two of us, I always have to be the responsible one, but in truth I'm rather enjoying myself. I'd never admit this to Randall, though!

UK Version

The ruins are full of obstacles and traps to overcome, not to mention buried treasures. It's almost as though they were made for Randall's amusement. He certainly seems to think so!

The floor has given way in places, but so far we've been able to bridge the gaps using large rocks.

With just the two of us, I always have to be the responsible one, but in truth I'm rather enjoying myself. Much as I hate to admit it...

Stout Defenses (US)/Stout Defences (UK)[]

US Version

Until now, my biggest concern was the state of this place, but now I wish it decayed a bit more!

These ruins have an ancient security system that is in perfect working order--too bad for us.

We barely avoided a huge boulder that came crashing toward us. I thought we were done for!

Randall is unperturbed, but I dread to think what might be ahead...

UK Version

Blimey! At first I was relieved when I saw how solidly built this place was, but now I'm starting to wish it were a bit more decayed; Akbadain's ancient defences still appear to be in perfect working order. We had a close call when a huge boulder crashed towards us down a narrow corridor. I thought we were done for! Randall is seemingly unperturbed.

We've got this far unscathed, but I dread to think what might be waiting ahead. I'm glad Angela isn't here to see this...

How Much Farther? (US)/How Much Further? (UK)[]

US Version

Randall and I are pushing on through the ruins. We're four levels below the surface now, but we have no idea how many levels there are.

I'm afraid that sooner or later we'll stumble upon an obstacle we can't overcome. I hope our luck holds out!

UK Version

Randall and I are pushing on through the ruins, somehow managing to evade all the pitfalls of this place. We're four levels below ground now, but the truth is we don't know how many levels there are.

Up till now, we've been able to use boulders to get across gaps in the path, but I'm afraid that sooner or later we'll stumble upon an obstacle we can't overcome, and oddly enough, I'd be genuinely disappointed if we had to turn back. I just hope our luck holds!

The Depths of the Ruins (US)/Crystals, Bones... What Next? (UK)[]

US Version

We are now five levels below the surface. There are strange clusters of beautiful crystals everywhere. We had to shatter some of them in order to make our way. It seemed a great shame to destroy such lovely wonders of nature.

It appears some of the previous visitors were less fortunate than we. We came upon some human bones a ways back. Clearly, we aren't the first to find these ruins. I hope we make it out safely.

UK Version

On the fifth level down, we found clusters of beautiful crystals everywhere. Randall made me shatter some of them with a boulder so we could get by, but it seemed a great shame to destroy such lovely wonders of nature. Ah well, I suppose they often say that progress requires sacrifice. Speaking of which, I think some previous visitors were a lot less fortunate than us - we came upon some human bones a little way back. Clearly, we aren't really the first people to find these ruins. I just hope we don't end up like them.

Separated (US)/Separated from Randall! (UK)[]

US Version

We've had some incredible luck so far, but I knew it couldn't last forever. Randall and I have been separated. I can hear him shouting instructions to me, which means he's not hurt.

It seems that our paths will meet up a bit farther down. I'm just hoping I'm right. We can't turn back now. It's going to be harder without Randall by my side, but I must press on and reunite with him.

UK Version

We've had incredible luck most of the way, but I knew it couldn't last forever. Randall and I got separated. On the bright side, I can hear him shouting instructions to me, which means he's not hurt. It seems as if both our paths lead in the same direction, so we're just hoping they will join up again further on.

There's no time to go back to Stansbury to get help. It's going to be harder without Randall, but I must press on.

Canals in the Depths[]

US Version

After crossing a complex of canals that brought us back together again, Randall and I made our way down to the seventh level of the ruins.

Why did the Azran build such a massive structure? The air here doesn't smell as musty as I would expect this far belowground, which suggests there might be a tunnel to the surface near here.

UK Version

After crossing a complex of canals which brought us back together again, Randall and I made our way down to the seventh level of the ruins. Why did the ancients build such a massive structure? It strikes me that the air doesn't smell as musty as I'd expect this far below ground, which suggests there might be a tunnel to the surface near here. Those giant spiders I ran into earlier must live off something, I suppose. Maybe this place has a unique ecosystem of its own? At any rate, we can't turn back now!

Into the Abyss[]

US Version

Eight levels below the surface, we reached the heart of the ruins and gained a glimpse of what was certainly the final door separating us from the legacy of the Azran civilization...

But we got careless. Randall is gone. He fell into a ravine, still gripping that infernal Mask of Chaos in his hand...

I just couldn't hang on to him.

UK Version

Eight levels underground, we reached the heart of the ruins and gained a glimpse of the final door separating us from the legacy of the Azran civilisation... But we got careless.

Randall is gone. He felt into a bottomless ravine, still gripping the infernal Mask of Chaos in his hand, and I couldn't hold him. We were fools to think we could conquer such ancient an powerful ruins with nothing but a shovel and our reckless ambition. But it's too late to realise this now. Far too late...

Last Steps[]

US Version

I can't just stay here forever. I must go on, for Randall's sake. I have to finish what he started.

How will I face Angela and Henry? Or Randall's parents?

Why didn't I stop him from going on this stupid expedition...? Why didn't I stop him?

UK Version

I can't just stand around here forever. I have to go on, for Randall's sake. I have to finish what he started, his dream of finding the ancestral treasure of the Azran and returning victorious to Stansbury.

Victorious? Pah! How can I ever face Angela and Henry again? And Randall's parents, what do I tell them? If only I'd made Randall see reason, stopped him from going on this stupid expedition...

Akbadain's Final Chamber[]

US Version

The last chamber holds a pile of treasure. It's full of gold and gems. A peculiar symbol of the Azran there marks this as their legacy.

It's enough for a lifetime of luxury. But was it worth dying for?

It's useless to me.

UK Version

What I found in the last chamber of the ruins was a pile of sparkling treasure, full of gold and gems, and the peculiar symbol of the Azran that marks this as their legacy.

I'm sure one could spend the rest of one's life in idleness and luxury with such a mountain of wealth, but what is that worth? Was it worth risking our whole future for? Was it worth dying for?

After That Day (US)/After that Day (UK)[]

US Version

I couldn't talk to Angela or Henry. I barely left my room for days on end.

Mother and Father gave me the hardest scolding of my life, and then the warmest hug.

I'm back at school now, but everything reminds me of Randall. I feel a gaping hole in my chest.

Search parties are looking for Randall, but the ravine was so deep... Could anyone survive that?

UK Version

After I got back to Stansbury, I couldn't look Angela or Henry in the eye. Racked with guilt, I holed myself up at home. Ma and Pa came to meet me when I arrived, gave me the hardest scolding of my life, and then the warmest hug. I'm back at school now, but everything there reminds me of Randall. I feel as if there's a gaping hole in my chest.

They've sent a search party to look for Randall in the ruins, but the ravine was so deep... Could anyone survive a fall like that?

Leaving for London[]

US Version

Everything has changed in Stansbury since losing Randall. The whole town feels empty, drained.

Henry was dismissed from the Ascot household. I haven't seen Angela in quite a while.

I passed the entrance exam to study archaeology at Gressenheller University. Randall always wanted me to share his love of archaeology. London awaits.

Good-bye, Stansbury. Good-bye, Randall.

UK Version

Everything has changed in Stansbury since that day. The loss of one boy seems to have sapped the life of the whole town. It feels empty, drained. Henry was dismissed from the Ascot household, and Angela has retreated into herself and never leaves the house. I finished school and passed the entrance exam to study archaeology at Gressenheller. Randall always wanted me to share his love of archaeology, and somehow it feels a fitting way to honour him. Now, London awaits. Goodbye, Stansbury. Goodbye, Randall...
