Prologue: So We Meet Again...

Professor Layton receives a letter from his housekeeper Rosa at Gressenheller University after she finds him sleeping on his couch. It is from an old friend, Clark Triton, and Layton sets off and rushes to his car. As he is leaving London Emmy Altava sees his car and chases him down. The two meet and she accompanies him in his car and convinces him to let her become his assistant and aid with his new mystery. In the car, Emmy reads the letter and Professor Layton the second message the letter has and you encounter Puzzle No. 001 A Secret Message.

After you solve the puzzle Layton reveals himself to be perplexed by the letter as it is unlike Clark to have hidden a message like that in a letter. Emmy is excited to begin working on her first mystery and Layton is taken aback by her knowledge of him. She reveals that she asked for the position as his assistant and Layton wonders why she wanted to work with him. Emmy lets on that she remembers something between the two of them that he doesn't but then continues the discussion as normal.

Layton begins to set some ground rules for her as his assistant and then begins to discuss where they are going. He reveals they are traveling to a town called Misthallery and tells Emmy that there were some ancient ruins found there 6 months prior.

Puzzles:

Puzzle No. 001 A Secret Message

Mysteries:

Clark's Letter: Unsolved

Layton received a letter from his old friend Clark that held a hidden message within. Why would Clark use such a roundabout way to enlist his aid?

Layton's Comments -

The message was written with a typewriter. I must say, it's very unlike Clark to write in this way.

Perhaps there is a connection between the ruined street and the giant mentioned in the letter?

As I suspected, Clark did not write the letter. Which raises the question: Who did?

It appears that it was Luke who wrote the letter. But why?

The Golden Garden: Unsolved

The village of Misthallery is said to lie of the remains of a great city of gold built by an ancient civilization. Does it truly exist or is it merely legend?

Layton's Comments -

An article in the Times put forth the theory that the Golden Garden lies somewhere in Misthallery.

Chapter 1: The Fog of Misthallery

When they arrive Emmy comments on the fog and Layton explains that it is known for thick fog and that some believe it is from a fairy tale. Now you are allowed to tap things to investigate them. If you tap on the town on the hill it brings up dialogue from Layton and Emmy about the townn's geography and a mysterious house on the hill. Emmy speculates that this may be Clark's house and they see someone coming towards them.

When you tap on this person he introduces himself as Aldus and tells you to tap the white box to the right of the screen, you must tap it three times to reveal the hint coin hidden inside. Aldus explains what hint coins are and how to use them before running off. Professor Layton explains how to move to Emmy and you can now advance into the town. There are two other hint coins hidden on this screen. If you click the windows in the upper left on a blue-roofed building and the sign next to the box that hid the first hint coin they will reveal themselves.

When you progress to the next screen Emmy asks about tracking progress and Layton explains the trunk. You can now open the trunk and you receive the episode Layton's Office. You can also read 3 journal entries; A Letter From Clark, My New Assistant, and The Golden Garden in Misthallery. When you exit the trunk you can pick up three hint coins by clicking a black hat on the umbrella on the right of the screen, one is the crate at the bottom left and one is the tower you can see above the arch at the center of the screen.

Now tap the boy to the left of the screen. He calls Professor Layton "Gramps" before giving him Puzzle No. 002 Tourist Spotting in return for the location of the Triton Residence. Charlie, the boy, is impressed by Layton's skills and tells him where Clark lives. He also reveals that his own neighborhood, North Ely, had to be evacuated because of an oracle, which confuses Emmy. At this point there is another journal entry available: The Canal Town.

Now tap on the police officer who has appeared on the right, Chippe. He reveals that Misthallery is sealed off from visitors but lets you pass because he was napping on the job and doesn't want to be caught. Now walk up.

You will come across a bridge sealed off with rope, tap it. Layton reveals that instead of untying all of the complicated knots, they simply have to cut it in one place. He asks Emmy where she thinks they should cut it this begins a puzzle which is not a numbered one like all of the rest meaning there are no hints or picarats involved. The solution is the top left rope. If you follow it through the tangles it is attached to all of the other strands, supporting them.

Emmy is wary of the bridge feeling nervous about its structural soundness but you can watch as a mouse runs across it. There are three hint coins on this screen, hidden in the signs on the bridge. The top 2 to the right side and bottom one to the left, they can also be repeatedly tapped to switch directions. Now cross the bridge.

You come across a completely destroyed house and damaged road, Emmy takes a photo of it. You can see a door to the left with a strange mark on it. You can now read the journal entry The Witch's Mark. There are 2 hint coins hidden here, one in the shadowy wall of the house o our right and one in the mailbox toward the center of your screen.

Now tap the red mark on the door to progress. Emmy and Layton speculate before being startled by Brock, the owner of the house. He laughs and seems slightly disturbed. You can now tap on the mark again for a third hint coin. If you tap the box just above the door ou discover Puzzle No. 003 Pick A Package. Now proceed upwards.

There are 3 hint coins in this area one on the railing in the upper right-hand corner, one in the window in the upper left-hand corner and one on the sign on the cart to the left of the screen. Now tap the woman on the screen, Jasmine, she will give you Puzzle No. 004 Reloading the Cart. She thanks Layton and Emmy and reveals she was evacuating and mentions the oracle again. Emmy and Layton become more convinced this is about the giant, mentioned in the letter. You can now read journal entry Townspeople Evacuating?

Now tap on the police officer blocking your way, Fische. He tells Professor Layton and Emmy that the road is blocked off and they cannot get through and also tells them to consecutively solve 5 puzzles. You can now walk to the right to pick up 3 hint coins the clock on the building, the brick post at the entryway (the right one) and the center window on the building to the left.

Now walk back to the left and then to the left again before coming across a boat and Emmy decides they must have a boat ride before they leave. You can now read journal entry The Limbs of the Town. You can pick up 3 hint coins here, the bucket in the bottom right, a chimney in the top left and one of the houses in the distance. Now talk to the man next to the boat, Bucky, he offers boat rides and gives you Puzzle No. 005 River Crossing. Now walk to the left.

Tap the house to prompt a conversation about the beautiful scenery. There are 3 hint coins hidden here, the left lamp on the bridge, one of the posts of the fence on the right, and the chimney of the house. Now talk to the boy, Finch. He reveals that Clark is the mayor of Misthallery. Now walk forward.

Professor Layton and Emmy decide to knock on the door. There are 3 hint coins on this screen, one in the bush in the bottom left, one in one of the windows in the top left and one in the archway at the bottom of the house in the water. Tap the green mailbox for Puzzle No. 006 The Mailbox Panels (US) or Puzzle No. 006 Letter Box Plate (UK). Now enter the house.

You are greeted by Doland who leaves to inform Mr. Triton that Professor Layton is here. Now you can collect 3 hint coins. One is the upper left corner of the rug, one is one of the top steps you can see of the stairs and one is the vase of flowers sitting above the stairs. Now talk to the woman, Beth. She asks Professor Layton if he was planning on seeing the Oracle while he was in town and Layton asks what the Oracle is. She tells you to ask Doland about that before Doland appears and tells you Clark is in the parlor. You can now tap the broom next to the painting on the left for Puzzle No. 007 Mopping Up.

Now enter the door on your left. Clark enters the room shortly after and asks how long it has been since he has seen Layton. Emmy introduces herself to Clark and Professor Layton calls her his equal. Clark reveals that they both had wanted to become archaeologists but he had ended up mayor of Misthallery. Clark now asks why Professor Layton is here and he is confused when Layton mentions the letter. He tells him that he didn't write the letter and they are confused as to who wrote it.

Clark reveals that the giant in the letter is indeed real and says that it wreaks havoc at night when the fog is thick, but also admits he has never seen it himself. He says the townspeople believe the specter has returned with a vengeance. He then explains the legend of the specter.

The specter would act as Misthallery's guardian when it was in danger, but this specter is trying to destroy them. He fears that he cannot help his town. Doland interrupts and suggests asking Professor Layton for help and Professor immediately agrees. Layton asks about Luke, Clark's son, and Clark lets him know he has shut himself up in his room and has been very withdrawn.

Episodes:

Layton's Office -

When he gets absorbed in his research, Layton has a tendency to leave his papers lying around all over the place. The cleaning lady, Rosa, has a few words...

Journal Entries:

A Letter From Clark -

I received a letter today from my old school friend Clark. It seems that his town is being destroyed by a terrible giant, and he is in urgent need of my assistance. Judging that this was a quite extraordinary emergency, I took the car and set off immediately for the town of Misthallery.

My New Assistant -

On my way, I was joined by a young woman by the name of Emmy, who claims to be my new assistant. She appears to know me, but I am quite certain that she was never one of my students. She seems very lively and energetic, and she's determined to accompany me. I am somewhat reluctant to risk putting a lady in danger, but I must focus for now on getting to Misthallery as soon as possible.

The Golden Garden in Misthallery -

I seem to remember an essay hypothesizing that the town of Misthallery was the site of the Golden Garden, an ancient city built millennia ago by a great civilization. I wonder if this has any bearing on the current case of the mysterious giant? Either way, it has certainly piqued my curiosity.

The Canal Town -

Emmy and I have arrived in Misthallery and are now ambling across the town looking for Clark's house. I had heard that this town was famous for its mist, which is explained by the many canals that run through it. This town appears to house many secrets...

The Witch's Mark -

We just passed by a house that had been demolished. There was a strange symbol on the front door. The townspeople call it the "witch's mark." Apparently, they believe that once a house is marked, it will suffer a terrible fate. The windows on this house were shattered, the beams split, and it was ruined, overall. The situation seems very serious.

Townspeople Evacuating? -

As we were walking to Clark's house, we encountered a woman packing her belongings to flee the area. We also ran into a police officer blocking the way to certain parts of town. Could this have something to do with the predictions that boy mentioned? Perhaps there is someone who is able to predict the appearance of the terrible giant that Clark wrote about.

The Limbs of the Town -

The canals that wind through Misthallery are not just for show. They are also a useful means of transport for the inhabitants, which is evident from the number of piers and small boats moored around town. I expect we shall have occasion to travel by boat in the course of our investigation.

Chapter 2: The Boy Who Foretold Disaster

There is now a new journal entry you can read Meeting Clark Again. There are also 3 hint coins in this room, one is the plate sitting on the mantle, one is the pillow behind Clark, and one is the coat rack next to the window. To do Puzzle No. 008 Mirror Ballroom (US) or Puzzle No. 008 Hall of Mirrors (UK) tap the empty frame on the wall. Now exit the room and talk to Beth, she believes Luke is behaving the way he is because his mother has been away for so long and tells you where his room is. Go upstairs.

There are 3 hint coins hidden here, one is the doormat to the door on your left, one is the candelabra next to the same door and one is the flowers on the pedestal. Now tap the far door. Luke doesn't answer and Professor Layton asks through the door to talk to him. Luke responds by telling him he must solve a puzzle first. He informs you that you have 15 seconds to perform an action in front of his door and you must inform him when you are to begin, but he tells you upfront that you can't do anything to solve the puzzle.

You are able to look around his door for some hints about what to do, but as he said before you can't do anything to solve the puzzle. Tell Luke you are ready and then do nothing as the timer runs out and Luke opens the door for you. Professor Layton gives him the letter implying that it was his, and says Clark would never write out a letter on a typewriter. Clark comes in and scolds Luke before Luke says that the world will end soon.

Clark reveals that when Luke does talk he speaks in bits and prophecies before having to run off. Doland tells them that it's Luke's bedtime and Emmy insists they still have business with him. Professor Layton asks Luke if he is the Oracle, shocking Emmy and Doland. He asks Luke when the specter will appear next and Luke replies that he will appear that night and offers to show them where much to Doland's dismay.

Luke reveals that Doland is how he has been revealing his prophecies to the town and asks him not to tell his father about leading Emmy and the Professor. They decide to go to Great Ely Street to confirm their predictions. You receive the unsolved mystery of Luke Foretells and you can read the journal entry Luke the Prophet. There are three hint coins hidden in Luke's room, the center of his rug, the pillow on his bead, and the plane on top of his bookshelf.

Exit Luke's room and enter the other door in the hallway. Tap the hat on the coat rack and the stack of papers on Clark's desk for 2 hint coins then talk to Clark. Clark apologizes to Layton and Layton tells him to get some rest. Now leave that room and go back downstairs. You can then talk to Beth for Puzzle No. 009 Certain Curtains (US) Puzzle No. 009 Curtain Call (UK).

Now walk back the way you came until you reach Bucky at the docks again. When you exit the house Emmy asks where they are going and Luke them North Ely District which is where Emmy says people were evacuating from earlier. Luke informs them that is because Doland warned them. Luke tells them how to get there which includes where the police have blocked off and tells Luke about Brock's house. Professor Layton says he would like to see other buildings that were damaged and they plan to go back to Brock's house. You can now read Journal Entry Trail of the Specter.

When you reach the docks talk to Bucky who greets Luke and gives him the Toy Train minigame and you can now play toy train Level 01 Bucky's Train. Now walk to to the right and down to find Brock's house again. Talk to Brock. He is still in hysterics but expresses gratitude to the Oracle. You can now watch the episode Laughing Man. Now walk back up and to the right and the right again.

Here Luke tells the Professor that some houses were damaged here but now most have them have been repaired and Professor asks if there was any connection between the damaged houses. Luke says there is nowhere else with damage remaining so they decide to go to North Ely. You can now read journal entry To North Ely.

There are 3 hint coins here, the left window of the building, the manhole by the stairs and a building in the distance. Now talk to the man, Thomas. He asks Luke about his father and mother, saying it was strange how his mother had left. You can now tap the pipe next to him to find Puzzle No. 010 Rat Rations (US) or Puzzle No. 010 Rodent Rations (UK).

Now walk to the left twice and walk up. You can collect 3 hint coins here, the chimney of the house on the left, the same house's mailbox and the ree on your right. You can also now read journal entry Landslides and Fog.

Now walk up the slope. Here Luke will say it is North Ely and Emmy mentions the hidden message which Layton decides was probably a test for him. Luke is keeping a secret from Emmy and the Professor but they don't pry. The mystery of the Letter is solved. You can also read the journal entry To the Hotel. There are 3 hint coins hidden here, the bottom of the lamp post, under the bench and, the top of the far lamp post. Now talk to Chippe. He will allow you to continue because you have Luke with you.

Walk to the right and collect the 3 hint coins in the sewer drain, the pipe down the street and the middle window of the building on the right. Now talk to Aldus who instructs you to tap the pipe at the front of the screen, which you will collect the tiny fossil.

The 3 hint coins hide in the wall panels closest to you and the light closest to the second arch. Now enter the room. They are all impressed by the view.

Journal Entries:

Meeting Clark Again -

It is a long time since I last saw Clark, but I must say he was looking tired. Since he is mayor of the town, I suppose it isn't surprising that recent events have been taking their toll. So far, the damage caused by the specter has been limited to buildings, but that does not preclude the possibility of human victims in days to come. I must do my best to help Clark solve this.

Luke the Prophet -

By some means or other, it appears that Luke is able to predict the appearance of the specter. It's thanks to this strange power that nobody has yet been hurt in the attacks. Still, I can't help but wonder how he obtains information when he stays shut up indoors all day. I shall have to ask him--if I can get him to open up a little.

Trail of the Specter -

According to Luke's predictions, the specter will appear tonight on Great Ely Street. Presumably the evacuees that we met were fleeing from North Ely. We still have plenty of time before nightfall, so I intend to first head to the areas that have already been affected by the specter to investigate.

To North Ely -

Luke took us to a part of town that had been under attack by the specter, but we couldn't find any noticeable similarities between the demolished houses or any clue toward solving this case. I don't think we'll get anywhere until we see this creature with our own eyes. The plan now is to head to North Ely and wait for the specter to appear tonight.

Landslide and Fog -

According to a man named Mido we met in the street, there is always a thick fog on nights when the specter comes out. Mido also mentioned that ever since the specter first appeared, there have been other incidents around town, such as landslides and areas where the ground has sunk. It is unclear whether this is the work of the specter or the witch, but these are grave matters.

To the Hotel -

Now that we are in North Ely, our next step is to head to the hotel, which will be our base of operations for the night. Once again we met a police officer supervising the evacuation of the area. Most of the residents have already left, and we hardly saw a soul. In fact, the hotel staff may well be gone too. If so, we'll just have to take a room and explain ourselves to the staff tomorrow.

Episodes:

Laughing Man -

Brock's house was completely demolished by the specter, but he's not going to let that get him down. He believes that if he just keeps laughing, he'll be happy!

Mysteries:

Luke Foretells: Unsolved

Luke seems to be able to predict precisely where and when the specter will appear but how?

Layton's Comments -

I find it hard to see how Luke can predict the specter's appearance without ever leaving the house.

I believe he is hiding something from us...

The townsfolk take refuge based on Luke's preditions.

As aside, Luke seems to be extremely fond of animals.

Strange Mist: Unsolved

Whenever the specter appears, the village is enshrouded in unusually thick fog. Is this also the work of the specter?

Layton's Comments -

They say the fog is thick enough to completely obscure one's vision. Is this the specter's doing?

Clark's Letter: Solved

The letter was actually written by Clark's son, Luke. He sought the professor's help and wrote in code so that his message would be safe from prying eyes.

Layton's Comments -

The letter, within which Luke hid a secret message, was intended to lead me to this town.

Tiny Fossil -

It is of little monetary value, but it makes a striking paperweight.

Talk to the man, Clarence. Emmy attempts to ask him some questions about the specter but he has nothing helpful to offer. Now walk to the left. The bushes to the left hide the only hint coin. Now talk to the girl, Bobbi who works at the hotel and asks about Joseph and gives you Puzzle No. 017 Which Doll? (US) or Puzzle No. 017 The Same Doll? (UK). Now walk upward. They see a cat and Luke attempts to catch it and runs off much to Emmy's dismay. You can now read journal entry Cat Pursuit.

The 3 hint coins here are in the scooter by the corner, a sign on the lamppost and the canopy of the door closest to you. Now talk to Hugo who tells you to catch Luke. Walk to the left and find Luke who quickly runs off after the cat again. The 3 hint coins here are in the brown boat, the grass growing out of the cracks closest to you and the far left bottom window across from you. Walk up.

Journal Entries:

Starting the Investigating -

Fortunately, the owner of the hotel was still present. The room he gave us offers a clear view of the street, so I hope that we will get a good look at this creature. We have no choice but to pursue our investigation, but I do hope Joseph, the owner of the hotel, will be all right here.

Gathering Information -

Now that we have established a base of operations in our hotel room, we have decided to use the remaining time before nightfall to North Ely, with Luke as our guide. We didn't see many people out but it would be best to investigate the neighborhood before the specter shows itself. Let's head to the other streets.

Cat Pursuit -

While we were conducting our investigation in North Ely, Luke suddenly ran off toward the forest in pursuit of a cat he had spotted. Perhaps because of his strange powers of prediction, Luke appears wise beyond his years. But his is after all still a child, with the unquenchable curiosity of one. We shall have to try and catch up with him.
